I disagree. His production created the hype and the hype is deserved.
He dominated Gomi then moved up and dominated Hughes and took the title. Then went on to move up AGAIN and dominate 1 Gracie and defeat another. Then he moved up yet again and took one of the best LHW's to a decision and gave the guy the toughest fight of his career. He also gave GSP one of the toughest fights of his career even though he was outweighed by atleast 10 pounds. Then he fights Hughes again, clearly wins the first 2 rounds. Gets in jured at the end of the second and loses because of it. Moves back down to LW and COMPLETELY DOMINATES 2 very good fighters.

I never doubted his skill. I just think he is an arrogant dick.

I think you're assessment is completely wrong. I don't think he ever lacked the will to be the best. He just believed that he could beat GSP without training to the max and he was almost right.

See, It's these guys that make the BJ freaks go overboard. BJ has taken on every challenge set in front of him. Some with more fervor than others and his record shows this. Randy USED to be the only multi weight class champ in UFC history. BJ can make the same claim. Think about it!
Think about how competitive the LW class is right now and Bj is on top of it. He BEAT the number 1 ranked guy in the class (Gomi) and avenged his only loss that was significant.
He isn't the greatest of all time, but sure deserves more respect than to say his hype if more than his production.

Maybe that has changed though.

Yeah, he wasted it by going wire to wire with Jens in their LW title battle (go back and look at the arm bar he had on Pulver, who was tapping as the bell rang), being the 170lbs champ beating Matt Hughes and now owning the LW title during the hardest and most competitive time period for the weight class.

The GSP fight wasn't the only fight I refer to. The first time he fought Pulver, he didn't show up. His lack of will was apparent in the later rounds. When he drew with Caol Uno, he didn't show up. Those were two fights, on paper, he should have won. His lack of will was his downfall in all three of those instances.
Not to mention, most BJ huggers can even admit that he hasn't come to every fight at his max potential.

It's easy to say he didn't waste talent when you cherry pick aspects. He should have beat Jens that first fight, and wasn't even in it in the later rounds. He didn't show up when he drew with Caol Uno. He didn't show up when he fought GSP. I admitted he has talent, so stop scurrying to defend him when all I did was explain why I don't enjoy watching him.

Not going into a fight at your maximum potential does not mean you lack the will to win. That's where you're wrong and that's my point.

Every single one of those fights he had the talent to win. It was his lack of training that beat him. I didn't say he had a lack of will to win, I said he had a lack of will to be the best, which those fights show.

How can you justify saying the dude didn't show up when he fought GSP? That's absurd. Just cause GSP has great wrestling and was able to take BJ down and hold him there, causing inflicting no damage in the process doesn't, in any way, indicate that Penn "didn't show up".
