I've been into MMA almost 3 years and this post explained a lot to me. I've seen BJ's records, but I didn't really have it all in perspective without the benefit of having been into MMA through BJ's "meteoric rise" (copyright Mike Goldberg). I can watch the old fights and look at his record and his opponents' records, but until it was explained like it was here, the relevance of those fights and the entire sequence of events was lost on me.

I have no problem admitting and accepting that I don't have the same perspective on and understanding of MMA as the average person who has been as big a fan as I am, only longer.

On a side note, I watched BJ vs. Serra today and was surprised how close it was. I had it 29-28 BJ, but the last round was close.

That was awesome, it reminded me of so much. I remember wondering how well BJ's BJJ would be with punches and elbows in his face, then being converted to a believer. I still believe in BJ, and loved the fight with Jens. I felt like I saw the old/real BJ that night. I'll take an in-shape/focused BJ Penn over just about anyone in MMA.

The fact is that BJ hasn't had a win over a top ranked opponent since his fight with Hughes nearly 4 years ago. All his great wins are in the past and he's still living off the Hughes win. That one, dominant win put him on the map. And without it we wouldn't even be talking about him. And everytime he loses(which is a lot these days) there is always some lame excuse from his die hard fans.
You can have all the talent and potential in the world but if you lose it means nothing. He has only himself to blame and I wish people would stop making excuses for him because it's getting real old.

It provides a great sense of perspective on BJ's career, but no mention of his fight with Renzo?!
