I did a little tally of everyones list and here are the results for how many times each fighter was included in a list. Sorry for all the spelling errors. Also they had to have more than 3 mentions since there were a ton of fighters all with only 1, 2, or 3 mentions.
royce graice - 96
chuck lidell - 61
fedor - 59
randy couture - 54
sakuraba - 42
wanderlei silva - 31
frank shamrock - 23
Tito ortiz - 22
ken shamrock - 21
matt hughes - 19
bj penn - 13
Mark Coleman - 12
bas rutten - 9
Nog - 7
Dan severn - 5
Forrest - 5
Cro Cop - 4

Ya, you can definately make good arguments for both lists actually. I like this thread because it is different than the normal, who are the best fighters of all time.....

no particular order
royce-brought bjj/mma to n. america
ken shamrock-showed most of the world the impotance of cross training
chuck liddell-made mma mainstream in n. america, 1 of few cross promo fighters (ufc/pride)
sakuraba-made mma popular in japan
mo smith-showed us the sprawl and brawl and that good striking can still win over grappling
PS
ts said most influential, not most popular or most talented or best fighter. These 5 should be the 5 that CHANGED MMA into what it is today

Nice work. I think its a shame that Frank wasn't mentioned by more, but seventh in terms of times mentioned aint bad. He was the guy that got me into MMA, and the more I learned about and watched of him, the more into MMA I got. I saw Tito pretty early on too and still remember an announcer saying "TWO HUNDRED AND... SOMETHING... PURE POUNDS OF MUSCLE!" (yet I don't remember which fight it was...). Anyhoo, I think everyone there until the 7 and below at least deserve some sort of mention as the most influential, and Royce obviously deserves the top spot.
