Belt Order

Just wondering... How come the black belt comes before red belt?

Sorry if this has been asked before...

And once you're black belt, you can customize your belt so that later belt colors are irrelevant?

I believe in many systems the red belt is reserved for the highest dan grades, e.g. judo and karate. TKD is one exception where the red belt comes before black. I've also seen some judo orgs where red is first juniors belt after white.

Really... that's interesting...

Only arts I've studied with belts so far are TKD and judo, and as far as judo, black belt was the highest...

Hi,

Karate systems I've seen seem to vary quite a bit. In some, BB is the highest as others have said, while others have red/white and all red for the highest dan grade. Judo is standardized with 1st dan to 5th dan being black, 6th thru 8th red/white, and 9th and 10th red. But the red/white belts are somewhat ceremonial. Holders of such belts can and do wear just the black belt.

In any event, there's so much variation in different schools so it's hard to generalize. Best just to learn the belt progression for your particular circumstance and not make any assumptions or compare to other systems.

When I was in Karate way back in the day, the belt order went:
White, white with one yellow stripe, white with two yellow stripes,
Yellow, yellow with one green stripe,
Green, Green with one Blue stripe,
Blue, Blue with one brown stripe,
Brown, Brown with one, two then three black stripes.
Black, Black with one, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, then 9 RED stripes
Red Belt = 10th degree black belt.
