I have two pair and I have been working on rubber guard stuff a lot. I have noticed a bunch of occassions where the traction has helped lock the arm in place. I notice it more with oma-platas than straight armbars though.
I wish they had made them in closed seam though since the splits sometimes allow the grrip panels to not be where you need them.
Overall I would definitely recommnend the shorts.

I've never had an issue with them rubbing together. You can buy these shorts and totally ignore the grip panels if you want, you'll only notice them on omoplatas and armbars mostly. Best Sprawls yet, but mainly because of the better fabric and bigger mouthguard pocket than the grip zone effectiveness.

Quite a few threads on the shorts, and several reviews if i am not mistaken

To be fair, based on the thread's title, I think it's safe to assume that he didn't know the name for this specific pair of shorts.
On a somewhat related note, I just realized this weekend how much I dislike wearing my Sprawls (V-Flex) for Muay Thai training. My problem lies with the stitched seam on the inside, near the bottom of the leg. Perhaps my "vertical handicap" has something to do with it, but because the shorts are so long, that inner seam begins to irritate my knees especially when performing knee strikes, during padwork. I'm still very happy with my shorts, I'm just voicing one of my newfound concerns.
