mouthguard problem, feel like barfing

Ok, my instructor suggested to all of us a few weeks back to get mouthguards

I HATE mouthguards but i was like ok if he says its a good idea then ill suffer. Anyway, i get the shockdoctor one that u boil and bite on.

And just as i thought i cant wear it for longer then like 20 seconds, after 20 seconds my gag reflexs come into play and I feel like throwing up from it, is this common or is my body just retarded?

can I do anything to stop it like is there some kind of spray that would make it taste good or something(i know i know). I just bought it so i dont feel like throwing it out now so thanks for the help.

Do you gag from the taste, placement or psychological reasons?

Try taking off small portions of the rear of the guard with scissors. This will give your tongue a little more room and help reduce the gag reflex.

I would suggest only 1/4 inch or less at a time so you dont completely ruin the guard

I didnt clip anything, I guess its just like the taste, I dont enjoy having a chunk of plastic and rubber in my mouth.

And by the rear do you mean the side thats closest to my tounge?

Trim back the lenghth of the guard so it does not go so far towards the back of your mouth. That should do the trick and it's not just you. It happens to a lot of people.

If you think it's the taste then you have the most sensitive taste buds ever and should probably get in touch with some scientists, they could use you in experiments and you could make a bundle from it.

Like everyone else has said... it's probably too long in the back.

We started reducing the distance the guards go back after reading some feedback about gagging. What happens is the extra material at the back of the guard pushes the tounge back just enough to trigger the gagging reflex by hitting the uvula ( the small piece of tissue that hangs down from the back part of the roof of your mouth)
