Me, The Newb and gear

Well I'm pretty much new to MMA. I'm leaning toward learning Muay Thai. Anyways because of my job I have limited time to even get into a gym so I'm pretty much thinking of buying instructional dvds and my own stuff for home. The closest gym that teaches kickboxing/muay thai is almost 45 mins away or more. I don't think I'm going to fight in competition or anything but learning for fun and to be in shape is more what I'm thinking. Any ideas of some things to get to get started? I've got an 80lb bag and some cheap gloves so far. I didn't know if there is anything else that could improve my skills. Maybe an idea of any books or dvds to get. Got any ideas?

I can understand training being an inconvenience but... I would at least get some basic technique training to learn how to throw some kicks and punches correctly. It's a hard thing to learn from a book or a DVD alone. It might be worth paying for a private lesson once a month or so.

I actually like that idea. Can you actually go to a gym, pay, and go whenever you have a day off work ? Maybe if it's just one day a week?

call a gym and find out. there are gyms around me for thai boxing, grappling, etc. that you can pay per class. some places do a "punch card" type of deal. pay for 10 classes or whatever and go when you can. that way you don't pay month to month and never go. just call a gym you are interested in and find out.

Depends on the gym... a lot of places around here offer a variety of different plans. Most places do a variety of "X classes per week" plans, obviously, the more classes per week you take the better the deal is. Most schools also do private lessons as well.

If you can make it a weekly thing, go for it... but if your availability is less than that, you're probably going to get more out of private lessons.

My gym is a flat fee to use it as much as your want... all the classes, all the private training, etc. It's great.
