Knee Burns

I've recently started BJJ and my knees are getting mat burns from rolling and they are always red coming home. I'm wondering if eventually my knee skin will get tougher? Most of the guys wear shorts too and I don't know if they share the same thing. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I don't really mind the burns.

They go away and your skin gets tougher. If you happen to be very serious about grappling/mma however, I would DEFINITELY buy a pair of kneepads from somewhere. Reason being, the skin will toughen and everything, but if you are on your knees enough from grappling, you will need kneepads to prevent injury.

I have these and like them. I would suggest picking up a pair and saving your knees rather than trying to toughen them up.

knee braces work great also to prevent injuries and it also prevents your knees from bleeding and getting mat burns..

Thanks for the link GSP. I only BJJ 2x week so I plan on not wearing anything and just letting my knees toughen up. But I am going to start wrestling and do not know how often I will practice. If it is everyday and it's getting to be a huge probelm then for sure I am going to get something for my knees. Better safe than sorry.

Wrestling is brutal on your knees. I don't know how it compares to BJJ, but I am guessing it is a lot worse, because you are constantly doign shots or on your knees doing something(no I don't mean those things.)

You get the point, if you wrestle, get knee pads.

knee pads are also good because they allow your knees to slide on the mat when shooting take downs or sprawling. They help make those moves smoother besides just saving your knees. I would wear them just for that reason alone. Plus in wrestling you spend A LOT of time on your knees when you're on the bottom.

Get knee pads. I wrestled for over 12 years. Shooting takedowns is alot easier with knee pads. Wrestling and BJJ together might get a lil confusing though. BJJ incourages you to fight from your back and use submissions and wrestling you never want to be on you back, chokes and submission get you dqed. Also when i first started BJJ i gave up my back soo many times just out of instinct.
