I'm 6'2 and one of the student teachers at my gym said to go with 8 feet. I dunno if that helps you though lol. I'd go with 8 if 7 is hard to skip with...BUT..the way to tell is:

Stand on the rope, stretch it up and it the handles should be at your pecks.

Really? Do you find that it's too long or just right? Maybe I should purchase a 9 footer

buy a buddy lee jump rope...he gives you 9' of "plastic" that you can cut to the perfect length.

to find the perfect length you stand on the rope with one foot and make sure the handles touch your armpits.

If you insist on hard wood floors (I prefer a nice leveled concrete, firm, little chance of warpde surface and no need to worry about scuffing) a knitted canvas rope would probably be your best bet.

buy a plastic "speed rope", and knot the ends until you find a length that you are comfortable with.

i have a condo and i skip on that thin foam exercise mat. pick both rope and mat cheap at your local walmart.

but as a rule, i like my rope about up to my arm pits.
