Jump ropes what are the benefits of diff. designs?

I am gonna buy a rope but, there are so many different variants of jump rope. like speed ropes, thai ropes, weighted handles, plastic or leather. Its just stupid and I have no clue what each variant benefits. Can someone pls throw me some info. I have tried a search and found that most of these things have to deal with comfort and preference is that the only difference? Thanks guys!

Wondered this myself....was gonna just get a super cheap one from the toy section of the store but if there's actually a benefit to a more expensive one i'd like to hear it.

Well I believe there was a discussion on the subject somewhere on Sherdog about not jumping on cement bare footed as you are more likely to get splints but I've never had a problem with either bare feet/shoes or mats/cement.

Yeah it's pretty much comfort and cost though I have seen some people fall flat on their face using a vinyl jump rope. An Everlast (any company really) leather jump rope should last you a few years....

Most decent ropes are in the $5-10 range. They are plastic ropes and are sold in vairying lengths to get the right adjustment for height. The ones I use have ball bearings in the handels for super smooth & quick skiping.

These are what I have.

It really comes down to comfort. I am aweful at skipping rope but have always liked the leather ropes as opposed to plastic.

Also consider the weight

cheap ropes tend to be light weight and wont benifit your arms any

heavy ropes will build arm endurance along with the normal benifits of jumping rope

Any idea on what the ideal rope length would be for a guy that's 5'6"?
