Knuckleblade,

Yes I can do the fangs for you but you need to call me so I can explain how they are actually completed and will look once it's completed.

Speaking from a dentist's (and former fighter) point of view.....

Custom made mouthguards beat out almost any other boil n' bite mouthguard that's out there.

Problem is, the most common way for a custom made mouthguard are vacuum pressed or laminate. Either way - provides for an excellent fit, but these methods are only for upper tooth coverage. Being in a combat sport, though, you need to bite down (to prevent getting hit in the jaw in a fashion to get KO'd). So it helps to have some breathing room as your jaw clenches.

Now, there's not too many places that you can send the molds in to get a double ended mouthguard that's fabricated with the breathing space - but what makes it difficult is to get the bite right (i.e. positioning of the lower jaw in a bit relationship that makes it comfortable and effective to clench the jaw). I'm still trying to find a lab that makes an appropriate mouthguard that way.

There are a few boil and bite ones that I do like on the market - Ringside's Brainpad (upper and lower) , as well as the Shockdoctor type (Upper only) with a posterior bite pad that allows you to bite and breathe and take a shot to the head.

Has anyone tried these mouthguards or had an upper/lower combo custom made?

As you stated it is very difficult because of the bite plain but it is easy enough to do, the major problem is most MMA fighters don't want a double not to mention the cost associated with one. The person that makes the best doubles is Ryan at Guardyagrill but he requires that he see the patient. Most individuals don't know how to do a bite plain or registration because of the material and lets face it, wax just doesn't do the same job. Call Ryan at Guardyagrill and talk to him, if your in Cali. he will be more than happy to help you. You can PM me and I will give you his other cell phone if you can't get a hold of him.

Forgot to tell you Dizzy that I can make them but I need a registration (not in Bite Wax or block) and I need a good upper and lower impression but I have made them before, the same goes with patient's with braces. The cost is high though and I honestly don't have any pics to show you. Also you can do an upper with holes in it so that the upper extends well below the occlusal surface but you still need the same materials as stated previously so that I can articulate the guard. Let me know if you have any questions on the lab side of things I'll be more than happy to answer your questions, I do some work for a few dentists in Phoenix. Take care.

Thanks! Sounds like you're not one of those fly by night operations that you find all the time online.

It's funny - when I was in school, we had a "national mouthguard association" president here in Canada that didn't have a friggin' clue about fabricating a double end mouthguard, nor could he direct me to someone who could. Just one of those guys out there that wants to head up an association to build credit to his name.

I live in a very hockey dominated town - where the upper custom mouthguards do just fine for impact. I've seen a few designs for patients with braces (the problem being that the teeth shift - so you get changes in fit - plus accuracy of the impression with the brackets on as well as fit). Haven't seen any that I'm too fond of in that respect. Any suggestions?

And you're right - the difficulty in attaining a proper bite plane ( as well as cost) will prevent most people from getting one.

Check your PM.

^Forgive my ignorance Mr.Patterson, but would the double model you speak of be the Dual Arch model shown on the Guardyagrill website? Or is that something else.

yep, but what I would do is actually a tri color guard with all of the colors of the Irish flag, it's more practical and do something like a design in the center such as a shamrock or a grenade. Kind of like Marcus Davis has or you can put 2 different designs. The design is up to you or you can just stick with the plain 3 color guard. I just prefer doing something original each time that way your happy and no one else has one like it, just like a tattoo, you don't normally go into a shop and pic one off the wall unless you tweak it a little bit. Just my opinion Let me know though because prices will go up starting tomorrow because of supply cost's going up, just go to my web site and call me.
