Canadians: Need Cheap Gear?

Here's a list of places and links I've compiled for training partners at my school. People were asking about where they could get the least expensive gear possible. This is what I've found so far. (All prices are in Canadian $, all locations are in Canada.)

*****SHOPPING IN OTTAWA*****

***Boxing Gloves (under 50$)

16 Oz Everlast slip-on boxing gloves: 30-40$ at most Walmart, Canadian Tire, Sportchek
http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c..._1992_82368927

***MMA Gloves (under 40$):

Century Martial Arts MMA gloves: 30-40$ at most Walmarts

***Headgear (under 50$):

Everlast headgear: 40-50$ at most Walmart and Canadian Tire

(In stores they have a yellow patch/branding like on the boxing glove posted above.)

***Mouth Guards (5-25$):

Everlast, Brain Pad, Shok Doctor: 5-25$ at most Walmart, Canadian Tire, Sportchek, etc
--Walmart carries Everlast/Brainpad brand for under 20$ (often under 10$)
--Canadian Tire and Sportchek carry most prominent brands (Shok Doctor, Brainpad and other hockey-related brands)

***Shin Guards (under 10$):

brand new / with tags / still in the package cloth shin guards (shin only; no instep): 8-10$ at Value Village (corner of Cyrville and Cummings)

***Compression Shirts, Dry Fit Shirts, Anti-microbial training apparel (under 40$):

CCM, Athletic Works and other brands (similar to Under Armor): 10$-35$ at most Walmarts and Canadian Tire

***Athletic Cups / Jock Straps (under 6$)

brand new / with tags / still in the package jockstrap with cup: 5-6$ at Value Village (corner of Cyrville and Cummings)

*****CANADIAN ONLINE / MAIL-ORDER SHOPPING (Internet, Canadian Prices/Currency)*****

I appreciate the effort, but isn't it a false economy to buy boxing gloves for $30, when they'll be useless in 3-4 months? At least that has been my experience with some of those brands.

With the dollar at parity, it's easy to order from the US, and many companies will list it as a 'gift' even if you don't ask them to. It's great that you want to support Canadian companies, though - and some of gorilla's stuff looks really nice.

Check out kofightgear.com and ssfgear.com for reasonably priced, well-manufactured gear. KO's gloves are cheaper than many you've posted and are made of leather, not everhide or whatever.

Those WalMart rashies are a popular choice around here, too.

You're right; most of those links are for people who simply need the least expensive gear possible so that they can train at all.

As for the Canadian $, the simple fact that it's at or near parity isn't enough. While some retailers will mark shipments as "gifts", most won't. This means that we often wind up paying up to an additional 50% of the merchandise total in shipping, duties or brokerage fees.

Ex: On a 125$ order form Title MMA I wound up having to pay 57$ in fees from UPS / CBSA. :S

Mind you, one place in the US that sells at DIRT CHEAP prices and didn't incur any shipping/duties/brokerage fees for me was Zeepk Sports.

did you use the canadian distributor they list in the web site? i think they actually do it through rival.

I've never actually had anything get stopped at the border.

i don't think rival stocks title gear they just take your order, and get it shipped from title to you. last i talkd to them they said that with shipping/customs it's not worth stocking it as they would have to jack up the prices.

nice list- makes things easier to keep track 0f competitiors

as for us we operate in the wholesale capitol of canada, so as of last year we started our greenhorn line of products to supply the demand for cheap gear in winnipeg. the price is cheap but the quality is not we still idn't ut an corners as our name is still on the gear. we should be adding a few more items to this line by the end of the year.

I have purchased some gear from CANBOX.

Excellent Customer Service and you can pay COD if you live in Canada.

Ditto....

If you want to order online, all Canadian orders ship from our Canadian warehouse. No duties, No Customs hassles and no brokerage fees... Can't beat some of the pricing that you had mentioned, but we sure can beat the quality on most. ;) All prices are in USD, but the CAD is practically at par, so you shouldn't notice a drastic change in the value.

Alternately, please be sure to support your local MMA stores when possible. There are a ton of new stores popping up throughout Ontario and you should attempt to support the guys supporting the sport at a grass roots level whenever possible. Many of these local stores are always donating products to local gyms, sponsoring local fighters and even bringing in top level fighters in for training seminars in your area. Don't forget about them...

Take care,
Chris - Red Dragon Fight Company
