they will both work. The slip ons are slightly less shock absorbent in my experience. Do you plan on doing the bulk of the kicking or are you going to be doing a lot of checking or just normal striking where you will need to do both?

I have grappling shin guards but i do straight MT with them as well. They will work fine if you get a good pair.
I have these:
MMA Amateur Grappling Shin-Instep Guards from Combatsports.com
and they work perfectly. Of course if i was going straight MT and against some heavy hitters id probably get a pair of straight sparring windy or twins insteps.
If your not going to be cross checking advanced muay thai guys and if your going to be bringing it to the ground the grappling shin guards work fine.

Also, board shorts don't have flex panels, or grip crotches, or split seams or anything. I prefer boardshorts because they are usually slightly heavier in weight and better quality, with none of the elastic waistband crap. Can't stand elastic waitbands and huge velcro closure systems, which are totally unnecessary.

You forgot about Nogi.
Welcome to Nōgi Industries
Marte: try out the Nogi shorts, they're not pink, they stretch, no split seams or any dumb stuff. They come in a 28 and fit about like a 28. Lightweight and they last; I've had mine around 3 years, best you can get from America.

Regular boardshorts are NOT tripple stitched anywhere (you must have triple stitching in the crotch area if you are going to grapple), do not have stretch panels anywhere (like he said). If you can afford $50 for good normal boardshorts then throw it down and get something like this
Clinch Gear Classic Black MMA Fight Shorts
SPRAWL V-Flex XT Competition Logos –2007 LE Brown/Blue Fight Shorts

That's not true. My boardshorts are all at least double or tripple stitched. Both my Billabongs are tripple.
