I don't know where you live, but if you're in Canada (some places in the US) look for a "running room" store. If you bring them in a pair of your old shoes they can look at the wear pattern and tell you if you over or under pronate.
I have a pair of brooks Trance 7's. They are my second pair, I used the same shoe last year training for the Toronto marathon and they held up great during training and during the marathon.
I can't help you with a sprinting shoe, sorry. And one more thing I've found (I've been running for about 6 years now) is that the more expensive the shoe the lighter it is (as a rule of thumb) but the difference between the weight of a $140 shoe and a $180 could be very small. And in my experience the two main factors in a good shoe are comfort and weight, lots of shoes have fancy bells and whistles, brand new shoe technology (whatever that would be) but I find that I don't feel much difference between a shoe with a "Progressive Diagonal Roll Bar" and one without.
Happy running

I'm planning on running on a daily basis. I think it depends a lot on your weight and build too.
Appreciate all the feedback! I don't know of any stores with the measurement machine mentioned but I'm on a google hunt now to find out

I have a lot of friends who are very in to running (former D1 runners, triathletes , etc). I would say the VAST majority of them wear Asics or New Balance. None of them are sprinters though.

it just depends on what you like best. go to a running store and ask them for help and try on different pairs and different brands. take them out on the sidewalk or something and jog down and back, see what's best. good shoes are huge! they are very important and not something to skimp out on. i run daily, and am training for marathons, and there is nothing like a good pair of running shoes. if the store wont help you or let you try them out, don't waste your time there, if they truly know what they are talking about they will help you out and let you test them. about a month or two ago i got a new pair, and i went with a pair of saucony's, but it all depends on what fits and works best for you, good luck

yer I would recomend one of the two--I have new Balance and they have shock absorbers --- very comfortable--and designed specifically for running

Why not ask your friends for their advice about the once a week run you mentionned? They can advise you about trails etc at the same time....
