Whey Protein FAQs
Well, the Muscle Milk wave has subsided a bit from where it was a month or so ago. Now whey protein threads are popping up everywhere! Hopefully this answers some of the more frequent questions asked on Sherdog about our favorite protein supplement.
Whey Protein 101:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/whey.html
(I should note now the bodybuilding.com sells whey)
How do they make it? Where does it come from? What is the difference between whey protein isolate, concentrate, and hydroslate?
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/planet44.htm
What is a good quality whey protein at a reasonable price?
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/whey.html
http://www.optimumnutrition.com/main.html
There are certainly others, but this is a favorite.
What's some dirt cheap whey (without having to order it)?
(Buy at Sam's)
http://sportpharma.com/products/whey/index.html
This all sounds too good. Where can I see a somewhat critical view of whey protein?
http://library.gnc.com/health_notes/...933008&lang=en
What might be some good threads to see for further information on whey protein?
The Differences Between Complete Whey, EvoPro, Muscle Milk, CytoGainer
The Best Protein Powder
ON Whey
does in matter what brand of WHEY i get?
(Thank you Madmick.)
My whey tastes bad.
Yes, we know. Try another kind. Or blend it with some fruit. Or mix it in milk instead of water. Or get isolate or hydroslate (if you're using concentrate). Or put it in a food you like (oats!). Be creative.
Who should avoid whey?
Mostly just people with lactose intolerance. However, certain types of whey (such as isolate and ON Gold standard) are said to be easily tolerated either because of the lack of lactose, the inclusion of lactase, or a combination there-of.
Do I NEED whey?
Of course not. But it is a very conveinent way to get high-quality, fast-digesting protein anytime of the day, but especially post-workout. That's why we use it. You should, however, make an effort to get a large portion of your protein from meat.
I'm scared of the cholesterol in whey.
First, most recent research suggests that dietary cholesterol has a small (or lower) impact on arterial blockages. If you're still really worried about it, whey protein isoslate is virtually cholesterol free.
Will using whey make me bulky?
(Laugh, but I've seen it asked.) No.
EDIT: A little something extra (I'll dedicate this to Clint...)
Berardi on Protein:

That's about it that I can think of, hope you're filled with newfound knowledge.

Looks good. The only thing I'd suggest editing is your recommendation of hydroslate for those whose whey tastes bad. Hydroslate is terribly bitter.

Yeah, I know. I'm saying it as an alternative to something they hate already. I'm sure there are some people out there who can tolerate hydroslate over concentrate. Maybe not many, someone must.

I must add yet again. There is another question that comes up all the time:
"Should I take Muscle Milk or whey protein?"
How should I know?!
But this thread can help:
Muscle Milk

i didn't want to start a new thread so i used the search function and found this
anyway i just started working out and was suggested to take whey protein after each work out. i'm just a casual person, who gained a beer belly and a few pounds so i wanted to put on some extra muscle, so i go about 3-4 times a week.
anyway i noticed that i'm havin a harder time takin a crap (i usually go once/twice a day). is there any way around this? i would like to take a crap whenever i want to like before lol. if there's not any way around this, what can i take in place of this? (i dont want to take any creatine or nothing, just natural stuff)
i'm a total suppliment/food/nutrition newb, so if someone can help me out thanks

First, read the stickies. They're filled with good info for people like you.
Second, I think the symptoms you're seeing are a sign of lactose intolerance, but I can't be positive. Also, consuming too much protein can result in all sorts of interesting digestive experiences, even for people who are not lactose intolerant.
Furthermore, creatine is natural and you really should just read around these boards a little. I wish I could help more but I gotta go.

it's ok, thx for any input at all
i hardly ever drink milk but i have no problems drinking it, so i doubt i'm lactose. maybe i'll try one scoop of the protein instead of two like the instructions say. i read some of the faqs but they get too much into detail, i aint all serious bout these supplements and diet and stuff
