When to eat in the morning?

My breakfast consists on a protein shake and a few weetbix with fruit, but 3 days a week I do heavy weights first thing in the morning. I am a bit confused about when to eat. I definitely can't eat the weetbix beforehand otherwise I feel horrible, but should I be having the shake as soon as I wake up and 15 minutes before I start lifting, or eat both when I get back?

Im sure you have read this many times but that early eat some real food. A protein shake is a supplement that you should have if you havent had enough protein for the day. I struggle all the time with eating enough throughout the day because I have never had a good appetite but just make a decent breakfast thats not to heavy (eggwhite omelet with chk, nonfat yogurt and some granola) and it will set your system up for the day to eat. IMO if you need a protein shake either do it PWO or before bed if you havent eaten much.

Also I understand if this breakfast seems a little too much but just try to balance your groups.

If u lift heavy u should eat something nutricious before you train but at the same time easily absorbable. If u train, say, at least 1h30min after your breakfast I'd stick to porridge and eggs or protein, + e.g. a fruit and some wheatgerm, or some nuts.
Otherwise if you have got less time you could down a protein and banana shake in in order to have some carbs as fuel and some proteins.

How soon do you lift in the morning? I like to eat a REAL meal first thing when I get up. I normally fix a batch of bacon or sausage ahead of time, so I'll just heat that up and fix some eggs. I'll have that eaten within 20-30 minutes of waking up, have my coffee and relax for 30 minutes to an hour, and then fix a smoothie/shake to have peri-workout while lifting. Keep in mind the breakfast is only 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon/sausage, and one piece of toast. So I'm basically lifting within an hour to an hour and a half after waking up. Those are typically my best lifting sessions as well. Moderately full stomach + caffeine + peri-workout smoothie = WIN

Unless you're a top level athlete pushing yourself to the limits of your flesh and bone, it won't really matter much if your diet is right to begin with.

What you SHOULD be doing is rather subjective to your own physiology and how you feel training.

I personally do not train with anything more substantial than like an apple and perhaps some fish oil in my stomach. If I'm training in the morning (weekends) I wait until after to have a real meal, and when I train at night (week days) I do not eat dinner until after training. For no real reason other than I feel sluggish and awful if I train in any way (lifting or otherwise) with food in my gut.

are you asking for food that digests in 15 minutes? so you can lift 15 minutes after waking up?

the closest I know of is water and whey isolate and sugar/maltodextrin

I agree with that. I disagree with the rest though, especially the whole egg white thing. Right now it's still early and my brain just cannot process that. It doesn't matter when you have your PWO, but you want to keep it exactly what it is... a PWO. Eat some real food first and take the shake after. You should never workout without eating first and you should never workout and not eat after. Running, lifting, bag work... it doesn't matter. The way a muscle fuels itself and restores is pretty much the same regardless of the exercise.

I like 4 eggs scrambled, 1 1/3 cup hashbrowns, 3/4 cup of cheese and some bacon bits topped with a dollop of daisy.

This ia a pretty good idea. Also, for most people Protein shakes are COMPLETELY unnecessary. The only reason one needs that kind of supplement is if their muscle activity during the day is beyond what they can consume by eating. Unless you are a VERY COMPETITIVE cyclist, swimmer, bodybuilder, fighter, etc, your daily calorie burn is gonna be around 4000 at most, and THAT IS AN EXTREMELY ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. Most likely you are around 3000-3600.

You are much better off with good food.
