I think the one point that may be missing in this debate is the perceived hunger satisfaction resulting from consumption of various food types.
Terry Shintani wrote a book or two on the mass index of food, a concept that might seem a little silly at first glance, but it does make some sense. Basically, he claims that hunger satisfaction has more to do w/ the actual weight of the food you eat, rather than the calories taken in. Here's a little
preview from one of his books that show's a chart (page 121) comparing different foods and the mass quantity of said foods required to reach 2500 calories.
Essentially, will you be more likely (capable) of eating a pound and a half of sweets or seventeen pounds of broccoli? Either way, the calorie intake is the same.
