Weight gainers ARE the sum of their parts. There's nothing mystic or magical about them. Read the labels...for example, the one you posted is fundamentally a carbohydrate powder with a dash protein and some other goodies...there aren't many people who would actually benefit from consuming a couple hundred extra grams of simple carbs per day. Whether they come from cereal or bread or a gainer shake is largely immaterial.

Eating a fair amount of carbs does make it much easier to reach your caloric goals if you are trying to gain weight. That said, it doesn't matter if they come from a weight gainer or half a loaf of bread. If you're going to eat empty calories you might as well get them from something you enjoy. Unless of course you enjoy drinking protein shakes with shittons of sugar in them.

Edit: Upon closer look, you may want to reconsider that gainer, anyway. 250g of carbs is ridiculous. All the gainers I've seen before have like 80g carbs per serving..

If you take other supplements or plan on trying to make a permanent weight gain, I don't think its so great.

99% of whats in that product is the following:

Maltodextrin
A whey concentrate, powdered egg, and calcium caseinate blend
A pretty basic multi vitamin profile
A tiny bit of creatine
A tiny bit of l-glutamine

12 lbs, 16 servings is $39. If you took 1 serving a day, you'd spend over $440 on 132 lbs for 6 months, not counting shipping.

You can buy all that stuff separately and take them at more optimum times in relation to your workout. You'll get better quality ingredients, better gains, and spend less while getting way more as well. Except for the caseinate, I currently take everything that's in that product and spend about $50 a month on supplements.

If you're looking to add on a few quick lbs, it'll probably be fine... but its basically just a mega serving of maltodextrin and whey concentrate.

I agree with Josh that if you are going to add empty calories then just do it with stuff you enjoy.

That said, I still think that milk and squats is a better way. GOMAD method.

What's this shit about empty calories? If a calorie is truly empty, it shouldn't be encouraged in any way, adding calories to gain muscle mass (as opposed to just getting fatter) doesn't necessitate "empty" calories, but rather calories that serve specific purposes for growth potential.

I wasn't advocating empty calories, just saying that if he really wanted to take that route that he may as well do it with a smile on his face.
