Weight gain/maintenance for Type 1

A buddy of mine is training for his first MMA fight and he is having trouble keeping on weight as he ups his training. He is 6'2 about 170, but cutting down to 155 would probably kill the guy. He is wanting to stay around 170 or even put on a few pounds while training to stay closer to that weight class.

Now his issue is that he is also a type 1 diabetic, so he always has to keep his blood sugar/insulin levels in check. Is there anything different he must do to put on pounds or would it be the same issue of calories in>calories out. I just know the higher amount of carbs you would take in while "bulking" could be an issue. Thanks for the help in advance

im a type 1 diabetic myself and he shouldnt really worry extensively about calories, but more so on the carbs.....if he drops in carbs, his blood sugar is gonna drop.....keep him on the x-gainer shakes to keep the weight up w/o hundreds of grams of carbs and make sure hes got some very sugary drinks, but not carbonated ones such as soda or energy shit around while hes fighting bc most likely the intense action will drop his blood glucose levels and hes gonna need to bring em up in a hurry so maybe gatorade or OJ or something

PM me if ya need any more help
