Great Thread a few things to add......
Hi my first post here. so let me have it if I need it..
great thread. Thank you TS and some really good points.
lots of good stuff from the other posters.
Berandi stuff is great.I wish I knew about it then
I just wanted to add a few things.
Dont underestimate the scince of this and the danger
so be smart and be careful.
I wrestled in HS ( and played some Judo)
and in college 2 years at a Div III school. Got a good offer to to the other two, could not do it any more...
I digress Lets talk about weight cutting.
I had a tough room in 1990 my natural class 136. Had the returning National Div III champ in it. the other two guys were better then me, sectional finalists (NYS)
the weight class below two NYS state champs 1st place and Runner Up. We were a Div III champs for ten of 12 years that my Coach was there, he is an Oklahoma State guy, and a world class greco competitor. We were a half hour from syracuse
so sometimes we could roll, work out with them and Gene Mills
(mark Kerr was a student then)
I was not as good had to move down two classes. to 118.5 i wrestled up at 140?
but it was hard.
At first I had to cut 10 to 12 pounds 2x a week later on 5 to 6 pounds
I could eat up to the morning of the cut.
so this is what I did.
(aside from wearing a silver suit standing on top of a ladder in a steam room, standing on my head, spitting, or not eating.or riding an exercise bike in plastics in the back of the van. shaving your head is about 1 ounce ans lets not count out standing on your head at the weigh in)
the main stuff:
acidic fruits tons
turkey, fish blueberries
eggs eggwhites blueberries.
baby food
yogurt
NO alcohol (not fun in college)
no canned food no frozen no precooked no salt
2x cardio a day one long run, one interval session.
the big one
Baths with epsom salts and alcohol the green wintergreen kind if I could
Ice baths
Ok food turkey , oranges lemons, limes grapefruits
greens like 2x or 3x a day
eggwhites/eggs oatmeal blueberries 1x or 2x a day
Im talking small small meals like 4 to 5 times a day.
no supplements ,even vitamins. I think on minimal nutrition
haveing green glow in the dark urine hurts you more than helps.
Kills your liver. ( and good supps were expensive)
I cut out the oatmeal like 2x before a cut.
after the cut
baby food. yogurt
pedyalyte cut with water.
some ancient Joe weider energy drink like powered tang. nasty!
maybe an Hard boiled egg
a tournament baby food, rehydrate, a nap
then I would "work out" stretch and grapple, run if I got lucky.
remember weighins 30 minutes before the gig,
urine test and litmus test for dehydration
and trust, lost of guys got busted.
I was afraid to take anything like that, our room was very very clean.
but lots of competitors did.
the cardio
2x a day separate from practice some days 3x
ten mile run 5x or 6x a week. for time.
1/2way thru the season I could do it under one hour
In 1991 I ran the NYC marathon and wrestled in a meet on That tuesday
so yeah a little nuts.
I had to replace fitness with skill, lots of good guys to beat in the wrestle off.
other session intervals sprints hills stairs buddy carries suicides etc
we ran hills forwards and backwards.
backwards.
I also did rowing and rode a stationary bike sort of like the one in spinning
always intervals 30 minutes of intervals 30 to 1 minute fast 1 minute slow.
maybe 2x a week I would swim
Baths
epsom salts and alcohal (withhazel or wintergreen alcohol too) help with recovery
and leach water out of the body.
Ice baths Huge for recovery, and again somehow being immersed,
water leaves the body
Im 36 I did this when I was 18,19, 20. for the little guys, Be carful ..
you can and will feel it later- I did not shave until after I left wrestling in my 2nd year.
I grew three inches, and suddenly had to shave 3x a week,
(ever hear an interview with a female gymnast , same thing)
My liver is OK, but I am pretty fit, don't drink, or really eat meat.
and my chiropractor loves me
Im NOT troy bouzakis but I did wrestle him 2x in HS
the dude I rolled with in college- the returning national champ later on
Fought BJ PENN!!!!! in UFC37 way back in 2002,
so you can figure out where I went to school.
Now a little crossfit, a little waterbury, a nice run keeps me young
I roll judo when I like did it in HS for 6 years thats about it
thanks

From what I've heard Pedialyte is better if:
don't want as much sugar for some reason (timing might make you "crash", afraid you'll look fat)
if you used any laxative or diaretic
Gatorade is better if:
can't drink Pedialyte for some reason (such as not being able to find it)
you'll be in a hot enviroment
if the activity in question will be a long one (this one's kinda vague but by I long I think they meant an hour or two)
Pedialyte is generally found in the children's section of your local supermarket next to the baby formula, make sure you hit on some MILF's.
Gatorade appears to be absorbed better if you cut it with water in a 1:1 ratio, apparently it's often a little too concentrated for most. Ostensibly that's what Gatorade Rain is, probably G2 is similar.

I have this same question. Thanks for voicing it.

Personally, I cut the carbs the Monday before the fight (Saturday). The training is tapered down, sprints are done and it's pretty much technique, game plan reinforcement and a few hard rounds w/pads and bag. Therefor the carbs aren't needed as much.
But I've never really been too far over weight wise. I have yet to need a sauna, though I do want to try a practice cut with one just so I know for future reference.
Most of the interviews I've read w/pros the carbs are cut the same way.

I've been following this advice, and am within 4 lbs of making weight for my fight (2 weeks still to go).
I started out 235-238, and am down to 225 within 5 weeks. Good stuff, and thanks for the tips.

I'm starting to think I need to eat more carbs
The only ones I'm getting are from fruit and veg (no rice, pasta, although I've had a cinnamon and raisen bagel this morning with pb and honey)
