The other 200g were probably maltodextrin which, in my opinion, is no better than sugar.
Weight gainers could be useful in specific scenarios or occasional use if you have decent insulin sensitivity. I certainly wouldn't use them often and for long periods of time. I have to assume regular use would kill insulin sensitivity and, worse case scenario, put you at risk for diabetes. The best thing you can do is just eat a lot. If you want to supplement some meals with powders, use straight protein powders or products like Muscle Milk that have fat included and lower carb ratios.
