Sundry Facts from My Consumer Reports Booklet
Just some useful facts. I'm gonna play with the "List" feature here, this may take some edits.
- Cooked vs. Raw. Cooking vegetables does destroy some of the vitamins. Vitamin C and the B vitamins are the big loser, typically dropping by 15 to 30 percent. But you can limit the loss of nutrients to 15 percent or less: simply steam or microwave vegetables with a little water or stir-fry them with a bit of healthy oil.
- A new study reports that organically grown fruits and vegetables have significantly higher levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants than conventionally grown foods.
Fresh vegetables: if labelled "organic" are certified organic.
Canned or Packaged: if bearing an organic label or seal, then 95 to 100 percent of its contents come from organic produce; however, if the label says "made with organic ingredients", then it may be as little as 70 percent from organic produce.
- Of all the deli meat cuts, poultry is the most frequent culprit of added sodium. Check for the words, "Contains a solution of water, salt, and sodium phophate." There should be options available without this added solution.
- A recent study of adults suggested that those who regularly ate breakfast were four times less likely to be obese than those who skipped.
- Farm fresh vegetables are the most nutritious of all produce; however, at many supermarkets, frozen vegetables retain even more of their nutrients because they have been "flash-frozen" immediately after harvesting.
- Blood Pressure may be lowered with a diet rich in fruits, vegetable, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products as well as drugs. The reason: when you eat these foods, you excrete more water, thus reducing your blood volume so your heart doesn't have to pump as hard
- Over 4 people in 10 with back pain said deep-tissue massage made them feel "much better." That's more relief than prescription drugs!
- Yoga has been shown to control blood pressure almost as effectively as medication. It has also been shown to alleviate the need for medication in individuals who suffer chronic back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis.
- Once again, aspartame is exonerated; it does not cause brain tumors or cancer.
- The leading cause of acute liver disease in the US is neither Hepatitis nor Alcohol, but acetaminophen (aka Tylenol, Panadol). Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Naproxen (Aleve) can raise blood pressure and possible harm the stomach, liver, and kidneys if used long term. The heartburn drugs Tagamet, Pepcid, Zantac, Prevacid, and Prilosec may all cause vitamin B12 deficiencies over time.
- These fragrances have been scientifically shown to have these effects:
Synthetic Green Apple, Peppermint, Banana= Helped Lose Weight
Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Orange Blossom= Reduce Anxiety
Lavender, Lemon Balm= Reduce Agitation
Almond Extract, Lavender, Orange Blossom, Vanilla= Brightened Mood
Rosemary= Invigoration
- Researchers found morning exercise increased their subjects' chances of getting a good night's sleep by 70 percent.
- Silver supplements have not been found to help allergies, arthritis, cancer, diabetes or infection. They are, however, toxic.
- Coral Calcium is simply more expensive calcium bicarbonate than regular calcium supplements.

Question. What is meant by "long-term use" concerning Ibuprofen? I use it, not every single day but that's the only thing that works on headaches for me. What exactly makes something long-term use as it pertains to that specific drug?

Mr. Study man. I would check two sources. Wikipedia and pubmed. Use Ibuprofen, liver, long term, toxicity etc.. as search words. Let us know.
I have heard of many fighters talk about taken them either taking them before fights or many times after practices. This would be a big benifit to them.

Lord I take Ibu just about every day. I also take Milk Thistle...so hopefully I have a push going. Ya know it's funny...I think with a lot of the medical community "long term" studies and such are about 12-16 weeks. That is too funny.

I don't know, I was wondering about that too. Got me worried since I've always been liberal with the ibuprofen, too.
I won't know for sure until the "Healthy Living" book arrives (yeaaaaaaaahhhhh.....you all see how I passed that buck? Expect to see me in the white house after the next major staff change, which, if the pattern holds, should be sometime tomorrow, then the day after, then the following week...).
