Question about Whey
I've heard/read an incredible amount of information on whey but I still have one simple question. Will you gain weight from taking whey?
I should say that I'm trying strictly to lose weight. I don't care if I get big or whatever. Cardio workouts are my main focus. I jump rope A LOT, hit a heavy bag, as well as run and mountain bike. To supplement my workout I also lift weights, but like I said, this is not my emphasis.
So basically I'm trying to cut weight, will whey help?

Gaining or loosing weight is about how many cals you consume and use, or don't use. Whey won't have much bearing in it either way.

No.
Whey will help supplement your diet to build muscle if you're weightlifting, but just taking whey won't automatically put pounds on. Since it's a by-product of coagulation in milk-making, it doesn't have the calories that milk has but is a much more concentrated source of protein.
If you're going to take whey, you might want to use a whey concentrate - it's cheaper, you don't need to ingest it directly after you work out, and it'll last longer in your system. It's a better option if you're weightlifting to get bigger.
But ultimately, I don't think it'd help you much. Just be smart about your diet, eat egg whites, chicken, turkey, nuts, etc. and you'll be getting more than enough protein.

Whether losing weight or not you need to take in a certain number of calories per day for your body to operate:
With Whey, you will be getting calories from protein instead of fueling on calories from carbohydrates, fats and sugars in other foods. I think any unused protien calories find their way to your colon more easily than the other types, but I'm not a nutrition expert.
So if you take whey, be sure to cut out something of equal calorific value that is less healthy

the first part of this is correct, the second part however is not entirely accurate
it has been well documented in the scientific literature that protein upregulates ****bolism relative to carbohydrates or fats
additionally, water is stored with carbohydrate so you will gain more weight than you might expect. also, if you are not careful about the types of carbohydrates you eat you may provoke a peaked insulin response which will cause the sugar in your blook to be stored as fat leaving you tired, hungry and of course, fat
recent research has shown a positive correlation between consuming whey and caesin pre- and post workout, and an increase in lean body mass
good luck with your training
