I don't typically recommend Muscle Milk as a pre-workout drink. An hour before isn't really considered pre-workout because ANYTHING taken an hour before is going to be digested by the time you workout. But if your goal is building lean mass, IMO, it's better used post-workout. And needing carbs doesn't make it any less valid, you need carbs? Throw some raw oats into it, or get a flavor where you can add fruit. But for gaining mass you don't necessarily needs carbs and lots of them post-workout, you need calories and lots of them. Carbs is only part of the equation. The Muscle Milk is fine, and then within an hour have a well-rounded calorie dense meal.
