Muscle Milk

It seems there's an average of about 2 new threads about Muscle Milk every day here. There's also a LOT of discussion about it in non-Muscle Milk dedicated threads. I'm going to do my darndest to help out clear up some of the confusion and maybe stop us from seeing the same threads over and over. If this comes out pretty good, maybe we should sticky it seeing as Muscle Milk ("MM") is one of the most frequently discussed supplements on this board.

BIG UPDATE: Cytosport has removed GCC from the MM formula.

For the newbs:
Here is Muscle Milk 101 straight from the manufacturer:

A Relatively cheap supplier and a sales pitch explaining the theory behind it:

About the Product:

What kind of protein is in Muscle Milk? (Short Answer: Evopro)
http://www.cytosport.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=13

What are MCTs?

What is Glycocyamine?
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articl...20/ai_98488370
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/glyco.html

Is glycocyamine dangerous? (Up for debate, but...)

Your thoughts on glycocyamine
Muscle Milk and Glycocyamine
Muscle Milk a killer?

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Does Muscle Milk taste good?
A: Yes, its delicious.

Q: Is Muscle Milk Ready-to-Drink the same as regular Muscle Milk?
A: Nope, read the labels.

Q: Is Muscle Milk good to drink after a workout?
A: Its not BAD, but a lot of its protein content is slow digesting. Something with faster digesting proteins (Such as 100% whey) would be better. If you're using whey alone, add carbs and other ingredients according to your training goals.

Q: So when is a good time to drink MM?
A: A lot of guys drink it right before bed because the slow digesting proteins help fight muscle catabolism.

Q: Does muscle milk have creatine in it?
A: NO, it has a creatine precursor. (See Glycocyamine)

Q: What are Leanlipids? How come all that fat won't make me fat?
A: Regarding dietary fat, read the stickies. As for Leanlipids, see MCTs.

Q: Will muscle milk make me a shredded fighting machine with no effort whatsoever? Is it magic?
A: Read the stickies.

I hope that answers some questions and clears up some confusion.

Nice. This looks like a FAQ candidate, so I suggest you add these other MM threads:

General Discussion

"What's Your Take on Muscle Milk?" (this thread is cluttered with quite a bit of informal dialogue, but Kabuki runs a Q&A throughout):
Muscle Milk - your take on it?

Muscle Milk or Cytogainer (for bulking)?
Muscle Milk or Cyto Gainer?

My thread: "The Differences Between Complete Whey, EvoPro, Muscle Milk, CytoGainer"
The Differences Between Complete Whey, EvoPro, Muscle Milk, CytoGainer

Flavor Discussion

The thread I started for discussion of the MM Flavors:
What's Your Favorite Muscle Milk Flavor?

MCTs

PDR Health's MCTs Reference:
http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/n...med_0172.shtml

The two posts by Standard and Terumo are the single best primer in the forum for understanding MCTs and their application.
Someone explain to me why this is wrong:

Yet another of my threads (sorry): this with an excerpt from "Power Eating" on the nature of MCT's. Although I no longer favor this text, this is very informative:
MCT Oil

No prob. This is much needed.

I'm also tired of the MM threads cluttering the front page. But I never tire of hissing, "Read the fucking FAQ, Newb."

So true

BTW, That link you added about Terumo's take on MCTs is GOLDEN. It was actually my question, I can't believe I forgot about it.

Nice thread, but I'm going to be pissed if it gets stickied before my Creatine: General Info thread.

Yeah, there are a lot of repetitive creatine thread coming up lately too. Definately see your point.

Theres a really good counter (to t-nations glycocyamine article) posted at the following link.
http://pogue972.blogspot.com/2006/09...scle-milk.html

"So, not only is the author of the Muscle Milk article using studies that were not conducted in humans, but they were conducted on specimens that had a specific disorder that already had a deficiency of glycocyamine in the first place, making them totally irrelevant for weight lifters.
Still, despite all the banter back and forth about the mostly non-existent dangers of glycocyamine, Muscle Milk is still not a great MRP. The author is right about the fats, but he fails to mention the high GI carbs in the protein shake - made of maltodextrin, it will raise insulin levels which will in turn put the body in a prime state for fat storage. Still, MCTs aren't as bad as the author made it out to seem. The other negative for me for Muscle Milk is the worst sin of all - whey protein concentrate. For anyone who is the slightest bit sensitive to dairy products, it will send the user running straight for the bathroom."

Any thoughts on his other critcisms? I thought the point of the maltodextrin was to increase protein uptake? Does that only work in the post workout window where your muscles are more receptive?

Edit, sorry for the confusion xtrainer. My mistake *to t-nations glycocyamine article

What the heck are you talking about? I'm not arguing anything. How can you have a counter argument when I don't even have an argument? Go back and actually read what I wrote. I'm not endorsing Muscle Milk. I'm not bashing it either. I just set up a thread to answer the oh-so-common questions that get asked about twice daily.
