Dinner or Protein after workout...
Tonite i am going to start a light weight lifting routine. I was checking out the internet for some weight lifting tips for jiu jitsu practitioners. My BJJ class is usually from 8-930pm and sometimes i roll with the class b4 mine as well. i go 4-5 times a week. I want to get a lil stronger so I was gonna hit up the gym immediately after BJJ.
I found this
Beginning weight lifting for martial arts and grappling
They have some pretty good tips and techniques on this site.
it does mention i should consume carbs and protein after a workout but here is my thing. Im 6'1 260lbs. I know after working out your body is in a catabolic state so i should eat something but with me being a bigger guy is it ok for me to eat dinner and drink a protein shake? I dont wanna gain weight u know just get a lil stronger. Thanks.

I wouldn't eat dinner and drink a shake. One or the other. I prefer food though.

There are different ways of doing things. I sometimes have protein/carb mix during a training session and then have a small/normal meal when I get home, then on other occassions I'll train and have a protein/carb shake post workout. To be honest, it's more about timing with me and sometimes it's a case of fitting it around my other commitments.
If I were you I would go for the protein/carb mix after training just because of the speed the body absorbs it, especially given that you are training late on in the evening, this is unless you are able to have a shake during training. If I remember right the latest Berardi advice was to have 30gms carb/15 gms protein per hour of training.

My PWO drink is milk. It's awesome. It's pretty well carb/protein balanced already and it tastes great . I also eat a meal about 30-60 minutes after I have my milk.

I wouldn't do it often, but sometimes I don't feel like going to the gym right after work.

Nothing wrong with that.

No as long as you feel it wouldn't make you feel too heavy at training, I wouldn't eat too much though. I tend to leave about three hours before training when I eat but that's just me. The PWO shake is ok but maybe casein protein (I'm assuming you take whey) would be better just before bed because it's processed slower. Some of the guys round here like cottage cheese just before bed also. It depends on how quickly you go to bed after training.

Maybe mixing the protein shake with milk instead of water will satisfy the carb and protein needs. Like the guy who like milk said

i blend oats/whey, greens+ and milk immediately after my work out, then about an hour later have a meal, usually consisting of a 4-6 oz steak, broccoli and a small serving of flax pasta
