Here's some more examples-
Sodium in isolation basically explodes when it contacts water. However, take on a "deadly" chlorine atom (or ion rather) and you have NaCl (table salt). Table salt does not explode when it hits water.
Here's an experiment you can try at home if you don't believe me:
1. Get a salt shaker.
2. Sprinkle on water.
3. Note the lack of explosion.
An additional example: Hydrogen itself is explosive (technically, it may be called something else, but suffice to say that when you put flame to it it pops). However, put a flame into H20 (water), and you will find that water isn't as flammable as you might think.
