I tried Melatonin and it's worked wonders for me. As far as I have read it's safe at dosages of up to 300mg....considering it's sold in 1-5mg tablets. I started off at 1mg but now take anywhere from 6 to 12mg from time to time. ZMA also works great at enabling me to get deep relaxing sleep.
Scottie something tells me you are getting a banzor soon...perhaps you should use that same google you speak of to read up on the newer research concerning caffeine....and how it's not a diuretic...

Im not so much an insomniac in that I cannot sleep, rather I have never had or been able to maintain a sleep pattern. After 15-20 years, my 'cure' is to mentally accept four or even three hours sleep as sufficient for daily obligations.
I do find the less on the computer a few an hour and a half before intending to retire can help soothe me a bit. As does reading, in fact even if fatigued reading generally helps sedate the mind so that sleep is less actiive with dreams. Now that I mention it, I dream continuously as well

So anyone that disagrees with you is a troll? I base my opinions on research and facts...not hearsay. Do a simple Google search and you will see that caffeine is indeed a diuretic.

No, anyone who continually posts bullshit just to get attention is trolling. I don't do my research on google, though. Thanks. You've been warned.

No, it's not. Read this thread, if you haven't.
Decaf coffee? Here's Poliquin on decaf coffee:
"Oh, and if you're bored on weekends and wanted to perhaps give yourself cancer? Drink decaffeinated coffee."
Mmmmm, methylene chloride and ethyl acetate. Unless you're drinking swiss water organic decaf, you're doing more harm than good, IMO.

If you knew me personally you'd know I'm one of the last people who wants attention. I just wanted to help anyone with some simple and cost-free advice. And I don't do all my research on Google either but it's very convenient and at my fingertips.
But I implore you...just try going caffeine free for a few weeks to feel the difference. It doesn't cost a thing and if you don't feel any different then you can just go back to using it.
But be warned...you may actually feel much worse the first 3 or 4 days but just give it a chance. You have nothing to lose.

i must say, living virtually caffeine free as of late has been a huge benefit to me. people that "need" coffee to wake up in the morning are those ones who should be most concerned with eliminating it i feel...not basing this on studies, just thought. you can put yourself into a bad cycle of 'chemical' dependency IMO.
that being said, i 'need' a cigarette on the way to work so i am way worse off than caffeine jonesing.

Caffeine is not a chemical in-terms of like you're suggesting. It's a naturally occuring elment with very few detractions to its use. If people don't with to use any stimulants that's fine, but it's good to know when scientific evidence backs your thoughts. Everyone is individual, therefore it's best to find what works for them and there's exceptions for every rule (like non-responders to certain things).

Back when i was an insomniac I used Ambien with much success. This was before the CR version came out.
Whether or not you go the prescription route, there are a few things you should do to help your body "train" for sleep:
- only use your bed to sleep. don't watch tv or movies in bed and don't read in bed;
- go to sleep at the same time every night;
- wake up at the same time every day;
- Try not to watch TV immediately before bed;
- if after about 30 minutes, you lay down and can't fll asleep, Get Up! Go read a book in another room, and then try again later.
