Something that may be of some interest to some of you in here:
Recently Ambien, Sonata, and the other major perscription sleep aid have been reporting pretty sever side-effects. Like driving while sleeping, cooking while sleeping, hallucinations, migraines, sleepwalking, etc.
The cooking while sleeping is pretty odd, we had a customer who this happened to while on Ambien and she actually burned herself because of the oil splashing back against her body.

Look into various Pranayama Yoga breathing techniques. They are designed to quiet the mind (put you into an Alpha-Theta range of cyclic brainwave activity).

i had the first type that KK described (where the mind is racing and you can't stop thinking about stuff) and still experience from time to time, but for the most part it doesn;t happen.
what i did was stop drinking caffeine entirely, don't watch TV and don't be on the computer for an hour before bedtime, no naps after 4 (must wake up by 4), no naps longer than 30 min., stick to a normal sleep schedule even on the weekend
i haven't seen the need for any herbal remedies
note:computer games and surfing the web were the absolute worst for me, my mind would be racing from 11 when i tried to get to bed until 3 or 4 AM, it was terrible

Caffeine shouldn't be detractive if it's a mental thing. It doesn't enhance cognitive function.

yeah, was more likely the sugar, i only have about 1 soda a month, but when i do, it is usually Coca Cola, not Diet Coke, so that i'm sure was adding to my staying awake.
but to stress the point, computer games seemed to be the absolute worst. i would play battlefield or battlefield two and after i went to bed i would be playing the game in my head for HOURS, it was torture.

Coffee is my poison for sure, I switched to decaff and im way better now, I used to drink about a full pot a day maybe more. Valerian root is no good, I had high doses of it and it does not work, nyquil will but it will kill ya kid.

Doxylamine is what's in Nyquil that puts people to sleep. Fairly similar to diphenhydramine, just another OTC anti-histamine. And I'm pretty sure it won't kill you.

cut out all caffeine....sodas, coffee, energy drinks, supplements, all of it....even morning caffeine....and you should fall asleep faster and wake more refreshed....not enough people give this a try and would be amazed at how much better they feel within a couple of weeks...

Now this is the latest in a long lineage of liquid sleep aids that have been on the supplement market for some time. As the products got banned new ones come out. I have'nt used it in about a year so I cannot speak for the current formula that's currently out, but this stuff is as potent as it gets, a small amount will have you in the deepest r.e.m. sleep you've had in years, your dreams will be ultra-vivid, and you will wake up feeling one of two things, either like a champ ready to tackle the day, or a rock ready to hibernate for a month. (Obviously the latter happens if you take to much.)
