Fruit Restriction?

There's a new article up on T-nation today by Cassandra Forsythe about the problems associated with high fructose intake here. Most of it centered around avoiding high fructose corn syrup, juice, etc which is all pretty "no duh".

However then she goes on to say:

Quote:
Stay away from these outside of an occasional breakfast:

• apple
• banana
• cherries (1 Cup)
• grapes (1 Cup)
• mango
• melon (2 wedges)
• orange
• pear
• pineapple (2 rings)
• watermelon (1 large slice)

These fruits are lowest in fructose; they contain less than 4 grams of fructose per serving.

You can eat these with less restriction:

• apricot
• avocado (1/3 medium; yes, it's a fruit)
• blackberries (1/2 cup)
• figs
• grapefruit (1/2 medium)
• papaya
• peach
• plum
• raspberries (1/2 cup)
• strawberries (1/2 cup)
• tomato (yes, also a fruit)
And that kind of threw me for a loop. I've never heard of anyone advocating for more or less avoiding apples, etc. Thoughts?

Yeah, avoiding apples does seem unusual, I don't personally buy that but the rest of it is common sense. Obviously foods that are quite high in sugars should only be eaten in moderation.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I'd look on Nutritiondata.com or something, I'm not sure how good or bad it is.

I did a quick Google search (for cantaloupe) and found this site:

Fructose in fruit

It has a chart listing the amount of fructose per 100 grams of each fruit, as opposed to the T-Nation article that ranks the fruits based on fructose per serving. It should be noted that the T-Nation article doesn't explicitly say what the serving size is, so I find it hard to compare.

In regards to cantaloupe it is pretty low on the list that I found so I think it would fall under the "safe" list on T-Nation, unless you ate a lot of it.

Thanks dudes. I thought it would fall under the "safe" list as well.

I think the idea of limiting fruit in an athlete's diet is a bit overblown. Keep in mind the T-nation article was targeting those that are concerned about body composition, not performance.

The actually amount of fructose that would come from dietary intake of fruit is fairly benign, IMO, in a guy training 4-5 days/week. Now if one is trying to lose weight and having issues, looking at your timing and composition of fruit intake can be helpful. I'd hazard a guess a lot of folks don't consider the amounts of fructose in different fruits. I believe one of Sisson's rules is to stick to berries due to the low GI/fructose levels.

Interesting. Somewhat off-topic, but I've read that certain vegetables (ie carrots)also have significant GI's and affect blood sugar. Is this something else to be concerned about? (assuming that body comp and/or dieting is a priority).

I won't listen to anyone who says to stay away from any fruit.
