Eating the night before weighing in (?)
Hey guys...
I am competing at NAGA on Saturday, and I was wondering what you all would suggest eating (or not eating) on Friday night to balance between maintaining weight and storing energy. We weigh in the same day we grapple, and I am right around the limit of where I need to be for my weight class (I weigh about 190 lbs., and I am competing in the 180-189.9 class). What should I eat on Friday night to ensure that I'm not overweight, yet not starved? Thanks everyone.

Unless you're significantly under the weight limit (i.e. a pound or more), then you shouldn't eat the night before the weigh-ins unless you don't mind competing at the next weight class up. And, even then, go easy on the food; a bowl of vegetable soup or a small sandwich should do.

nice martin. While I dont have an answer, I hate you for getting to go to naga. I was supposed to compete in it but my trainers mother-in-law passed away and the memorial is that weekend, so we had to scratch it. I want a damn samurai sword!!

Do you know how much, if any, weight you lose over night? Some people wake up 2-3 pounds lighter than they were the night before, some not at all. That would be my first consideration. Also since you weigh in the same day, water cutting is pretty much out.
Also do you weigh in in the am, compete in the pm? Or weigh in at get right at it?

Ok, I'll answer for real.
I would a veggie and nothing else. Like a portion of steamed Brocoli for example.

Its a good excuse to eat high fat, calorie dense food, which is what i usually eat the night before a competition (one of the few times I ollow myself to eat junk like pastry, choclate etc). Liquids weigh a lot so I usually avoid soups and other water based foods incase your body decides to retain the water ( which it might depending on your carb intake, sodium levels, hydration etc). If i were you, i would go and roll easy for a couple hours friday to drop some water sweating (wear your gi and a couple sweaters if you need to, and roll with someone you know and trust), then weigh yourself and see how much you can eat. Then eat what you want until you hit your target weigth. The next moring you should be a little under.
