I can't help but notice the people who claim we don't need more meat are always skinny weaklings... I mean, sure there are some big strong vegans out there I guess, but they're never the guys writing books and giving lectures on the subject.

Erm... he actually says he eats meat in the vid. Plus, the due`s a writer, not a powerlifter.

I know who he is, and I'm a big ted fan, but it always strikes me as funny when somebody talks about how we should eat less meat and be healthier... My definition of healthy involves strength. Anyways, from the sounds of it, his arguments are mostly that we should eat more veggies, and be more environmentally conscious.
in the comments on that video somebody wrote that there were (previous to western intervention) over 75 million buffalo in north america, roughly the same number of cattle in modern day. anyone know if that's true?
for what it's worth, I agree with him in that modern farming (ranching?) is an ecological disaster.

I am REALLY sick of people saying don't eat meat for the sake of the environment...optimal nutrition and political/ethical/environmental ideologies are VERY different subjects. It needs to stay that way.
If someone wants to say that meat consumption is going to destroy the planet, fine, but don't tell me that by not eating meat we're going to save the planet AND be healthier...because that's bull.

Diet = consumption. You can consume in any market ethically or not. Whether you choose to buy your nikes made in a third world sweatshop, or buy american made newbalances is up to you, and in a capitalist world, where you money goes dictates how corporations behave. This is true in diet and nutrition as well, and while it's wrong to say "meat is bad for you cause it's bad for the environment," meat that is the worse for the environment (industrial ranching practices) is probably the worst for you.
I dunno, Conscientious consumption is something I strive for. but more often than not I feel all alone in that. with 85% ground beef at costco only a buck a pound sometimes, it's hard to believe anyone else going to pay 8+ bucks a pound for grass fed and sustainable.
it really IS all connected though. You can't separate politics, ethics, environment, or nutrition on the issue. It gets even more complicated when you consider what are ordinarily unseen costs and damage to health from import and export practices and the burning of fossil fuels, polution etc. long term, that 99 cent beef may cost you 8 bucks a pound to repair the damage it does to your body.
maybe I've been up all night and I'm rambling...

I only have a second to post, but my main point is that environmental/economic/political/whatever debates are one thing, and optimal nutrition is something else. If you're going to argue for no meat consumption on some ideological ground, fine, but don't tell me that I'll be healthier for it. I just want them to be honest: You want me to sacrifice my health/performance for the sake of the planet, your economic beliefs, your political ideology, etc.

+1... I was going to dispute something Urban said, but there is no need. After his last post, I see that we're on the same page.
For me, I cannot see the video because of an Internet Blocker on my work computer. I'm looking at this in a totally unbiased manner. Realistically, there are greater concerns and issues for the planet than meat consumption. Again, oxygen wasted on a less meaningful argument.
