Berardi's 7 habits

I ordered Grappling Nutrition the other week, but of course it hasn't gotten here yet because of how slow FPO shipping can be. To get myself ready I've started following Berardi's 7 habits (sometimes referred to as 10 habits, when a few misc extras are thrown it), which are supposed to make the core of any eating program.

They're in the sticky but in case you didn't read it:
1)Eat every 2-3 hours
2)Eat complete protein with every meal
3)Eat fruits and veggies with every meal
4)Ensure that all your carbs come from fruits/veggies (except for post work out shakes)
5)Get enough fat (25-35% of calories)
6)Drink 0 calorie beverages
7)Eat mostly whole food.

The extra 3 in case you were wondering are: get variety, plan your meals, and cheat 10% of the time.

All I can say is wow. I'm feeling great. My energy levels are high and my workouts have been great. I'm eating a lot more than I used to because I used to get lazy and skip meals, but now I'm forcing myself to eat every 3 hours. My weight went up a bit at first because of this but has came back down. Today was the first day I was actually lighter than I was before I started eating this much. I'm really looking forward to seeing what else is in the book.

My standard approach to getting in shape has always been to just cut carbs. Up the protein, drop the sugars, stick with fruits and veggies... That was pretty much the extent of my effort and it used to always work for me. My weight would drop and my workouts wouldn't suffer, but that hasn't been the case the last few times around. I dunno, maybe I'm getting old. My weight has been (very) stubborn and my energy levels seemed to have dropped lately when I try that approach.

I really think these 7 rules should be emphasized more in the sticky, or get their own sticky, because of how much of a difference they can make. I've tried creatine (still taking it, actually). I've added EFA supplements to my diet. I use post work out and pre work out shakes. I even use green tea supplementation. But no change I've made has improved my overall energy better than sticking to these habits.

Berardi is teh shit, man Most everything he says is backed, and makes good sense.

The only two issues I have with what he's said so far are:

pH and high-alkaline diets. Not sure if it actually works they way he says, and
Vitamin C doses over 250mg at a time becoming "pro-oxidant".

I really like the Grappler's Diet.

My only complaints would be that the no startchy carb things (except post workout) gets a little old. I guess it just depends on your self control. I just found myself craving carbs at different times of the day.

I also didn't like his promotions for biotest....I think he needs to be a little more professional in his book.

That being said...the program works....really well. I was eating a ton of food and losing body fat. It was great. Good luck with it.

Anyone have a link for the cookbook he has?

I've done some very low carb dieting so I'm used to the cravings. It's actually a lot easier, almost not even a problem considering that I get plenty of carbs throughout the day from fruits and veggies. A lot of times I don't even bother with starchy carbs during the post workout window, I just use the time to take a shake and go back to meat and veggies. I think eating every three hours helps too. Since I'm never really hungry I don't have cravings often.

Yeah, he plugged Biotest's Surge, but he had a hand in making it so you can't really blame him. I'm sure he gets some sort of profit sharing from his contribution to the formula so he is really plugging himself, too. It would have been good of him to explain how to make a shake similar to surge on your own like he did in another article I found. He published an article on post nutrition once in which he said whey protein + gatorade was a low budget solution for a post workout shake, it's just hard to find that article. Putting that in the book would have been nice.

You realize he developed the formula for Surge, right? And advised on the development of Power Drive.

He recommends these two supplements specifically. He recommends nondescript fish oil pills but mentions that Biotest's version meets his personal criteria for the supplement. He recommends Greens+ which isn't produced by Biotest at all.

These are the only four supplements he says he takes regularly himself. He also recommend creatine, but recommends Creapure, and Biotest is one of 5 companies I know that packages Creapure.

He takes a section out of PN to explain who does and doesn't give him money. He's couldn't possibly be more professional.
