3 Shakes a day?
I was reading Scrawny to Brawny, and from what I gather, you are supposed to take 3 carb/protein shakes, I before workout, 1 during, and 1 after?
Is that right? Is that what he is saying?

Would that imply that on days where do you don't work out you would only need one shake?

I don't think a carb/protein shake is needed in the morning. Why would you want the insulin spike if you're not training?
This is what the TS is asking. Yes, optimally you could have one before, one during and one after. But I like to simply make a larger one and sip it during the workout, then slamming whats left afterwards.
Otherwise you end up with a belly full of liquid and a desire to go throw up.

I have a carb and protein shake in the morning. However, the carbs are from rolled oats I've ground up.

Ah. This is more of a meal replacement shake, then. I always assume carb/protein to mean simple carbs like maltodextrin/dextrose

I do drink that kind of shake as well but like it's stated above I only do it PWO.

Shakes are your friend.

Trying to lose some weight here...gradually of course.
Would eating 2 meals with snacks(fruits & such) in between and a shake to help with protein at the end of the day after a workout be all right?
If so, would you or anyone have any recommendations on a shake that could be a meal replacement?
I ask because I'm the ultimate newbie when it comes to everything healthy and I've asked a few people at the mma gym I'm attending and they've been giving me some pointers but I don't want to make it seem like every time I go to class I have another health question.
Also, I normally don't make it home until after 9:30 and it seems like many recommend not eating a full meal that late; however, I don't normally sleep until 1 in the morning or later so I don't know if that rule applies to me?

^^^ I know how you feel man. I am still a newbie and I feel like I've been reading about healthy nutrition endlessly for the past two months. Start with the FAQ. The thread and the threads it contains links to have a wealth of information.
That being said, I don't think drinking a shake as a meal replacement is a bad thing at all. Hell, you can blend a whole meal into a shake if you're creative. I do a shake in the morning as a meal replacement. Here it is:
- 2 scoops whey
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup frozen fruit
- 2 tbsp organic peanut butter
- liquid base: 1% milk
You can switch up the liquid base to water if you're trying to lose weight and you can also cut out the peanut butter.
The protein shake sticky has a zillion great meal replacement shakes as well.
