Improving cardio while bulking?

How do I do it? I have a big judo tournament middle of march and I will have to compete in -81kg. Im currently 78kg and my cardio is shit. I basically need to improve my cardio while putting on weight. Is this possible in the time I have left? How should I go about doing it?

Yes, of course its possible!
In its simplest form.... Calories in vs calories out is all you need to tell yourself.
Eat more calories than your burning, and you will put on weight.
If your not putting on weight, EAT MORE!!!

1st off, have you taken into account the weigh of your Judo GI and belt?. If you weigh 78kgs and the tournament is below 81kgs then I'd say that the GI and belt will weigh a minimum of 1-1.5 kgs, possibly more. So that doesn't leave you much to gain physically.

Would they be strict with you if you came in a lp or 2 over 81kgs, if they are strict over it then I'd say fuck bulking and make sure that you can make weight. You don't want to mess it up and end up being a really small guy in the higher weight division.

If you are planning on bulking then I'd start a strength program (see the FAQ's in the Strength + Power forum) and maybe do some HIIT workouts on the days between to improve your cardio. Judo's a bitch of a workout anyway, so working on that will obviously help your conditioning aswell.

You'll obviously need to increase your calories also. That's my take on it.

I think in this competition you way in without the gi. But thats a very good point, I shall check. As for strength routine, I already have one. I lift 3 days a wk.
As for judo improving my cardio, god i know it! I will be training 5-7 times a wk (bjj and judo). I could just try pushing myself harder in those classes, but i still feel i should do more for my cardio as its pretty poor atm.

Kettlebells FTW! Two-Arm C&J for reps will do the trick. Throw in some TGUs, Presses and alot of clean calories you should be fine. Also, throwing in some sprint work will help.

Assuming that you do weigh in without the GI on then don't think there's much wrong with what you've already posted. It sounds to me like you've got some hard sessions of Judo/BJJ coming up, plus the 3 days a week weights sessions will help with the bulking (assuming you have a good program to follow).

To increase your weight you're going to have to up the calories quite a bit.

The only other thing I would suggest you try to incorporate into things is maybe some HIIT work. Stuff like Tabata. Burpees or Sprints. I know this advice comes up a lot and seems clichéd but it works your cardio hard.

I changed my training around quite a bit about a year ago. I used to do a lot of LSD training and my body would feel fatigued. I've cut that down a lot and most of my training is based around HIIT methods and I feel my cardio is better but best of all is that I don't feel like an achy old man all the time!

Food for thought. Good luck anyhow.

Agreed on the LSD....you do it enough and you just don't feel as springy. I was preparing for a marathon earlier last year and could handle the exhaustion of long runs but my knees and feet were just beat to hell the whole time. It can be done effectively but conditioning the joints and the bones is the larger part of LSD. Part was my fault though as although it was LSD I would still push as fast a pace as I could handle. LSD really means...sloooooooooooow. Which i don't see anyone jogging 18 miles around the octagon at a snails pace getting ready for a fight.
