Working Out On A Rowing Machine

How beneficial it is using a rowing machine, i mean how good are they for a overall body workout?

Like how does it compare to running, jumping rope, doing stairs etc....?

My parents are buying one and i would like to know how good they really are?

Can anyone shed some light on them?

Thanks.
