Why so heavy?

I'm 21 years old, 6'2" with an athletic build (I've played sports such as hockey and rugby) and I'm getting more and more into MMA (I've trained Tae Kwon Do, Wrestling, and Muay Thai)...

I'm not fat...but not exactly lean either. Yesterday I weighed in at 246 lbs. This is shocking considering I've been running 6 days a week (the past two weeks after a long layoff) between 5-10 km, and implementing a steady weightlifting routine. I also do a brisk walk every second morning.

This time last year I weighed 225 lbs.

I would like to fight (if I ever seriously commit to MMA) at 205. How long will it take before I see a change in my weight - or will I?

Also, I don't go crazy with dieting, I eat very high protein, chicken, steak, and lots of vegetables. Not a lot of garbage foods.

Any kind of advice/encouragement would be appreciated.

Man this question comes up all the time. When you post your eating habits be more specific. If you are looking to lose some weight you have to look at your diet FIRST. Training a very very close second....but......diet is the key.

What is your typical day of eating like?

I usually have a bowl of granola/oats/raisins for breakfast, or straight up over-easy eggs (3-4) with whole wheat toast....

Then for lunch I usually have a Tuna sandwich (or two, on whole wheat bread) with an orange juice

and supper is chicken or steak with green beans and salad, potatoes

Maybe you're just built like The Thing - if you have an endomorphic build at 6' 2" you might be a natural heavyweight.

People put alot of stock in Tabatas and HIIT, but in my experience distance running is most effective for dropping weight (I'm down from 200 to 185 in six weeks, whereas my weight never changed doing tabata sprints and complexes). Other than that my only advice is cut your calorie intake and maybe try cardio sessions first thing in the morining before breakfast.

eat more often in the day...if i ever start dropping to 3 meals a day or less, no matter how clean i'm eating, my weight starts to creep back up...

start adding in two snacks, and try not to go more than about 3 hrs without eating something. a snack can be as simple as a small handful of nuts or an apple. try to keep your blood sugar stable throughout the day, eat slowly, drink at least a gallon a day.

also, make sure to eat within one hour of waking

Are you serious?? I have been reading about 5-6 meals a day for ages now, but for me, as soon as I toss in an extra meal above 3, a small amount of peanuts, or yougurt, my weight goes up...

Your meals should be smaller then. Don't think of it as doubling the amount of food you eat per day, rather taking that same amount and dispersing it more evenly to keep your bloodsugar steady.

If you eat 4-5 small meals a day vs. 3 larger meals your body has an easier time metabolizing the smaller meals and also slightly speeds up your metabolism which is turn burns more fat.
