Why do people walk on the treadmill?

My gym has about 25 treadmills. 75% of them are used at all times. However anytime i glance there i notice everyone using it is always walking on an uphill. The odd time you might see someone jogging.

Where the hell did this walking thing for a workout come from and how did it become so popular? People should know its gonna take more work then that.

Either they're cooling down, or they're lazy.

but in the end, who cares?

As a matter of fact if they are older or have heart disease, that might be part of their exercise prescription. Walking is one of the best and most commonly used cardiovascular exercises for individuals diagnosed with heart disease. Plus, you can get a lot of people who are not in shape up to their maximum heart rate walking at an incline on a treadmill.

I walk on a steep incline after working out, especially after a leg workout. I don't feel like skipping rope or jogging. After, I stretch. What's your problem with that? On off days I'll also walk briskly on an incline for active recovery, it's great for the PC the day after squats or deadlifts. Again, to each their own.

if you WALK for a long time (over 20-30 minutes) you will actually start burning fat in your body, whereas if you go all out and run you are developing better conditioning but not really burning FAT. I wish I could tell you all the technical explanation but basically a professional trainer explained that to me.

well, i do 10 mins walking in my cardio, i run in the morning and by midday if i had to run again my shins would just kill me. i ride for 20, walk for 10, then ride again. either way you'll burn some calories so, i disagree with the lazy comments. lazy people wouldnt be at the gym. lol

I hate people who walk on the treadmill if they aren't warming up or cooling down. The gym that I work out in has an indoor running/walking track and people still use the treadmills to walk.

it has to do with heart rate, anything under 135 is fat burning zone or something. the thing with that, is your burning more fat during the excrise, but when its done its done. HIT you burn it for a good bit after its done.

Sorry for the lack of info.... at my gym the typical age is 20-35. So young people, that is all they do after whatever workout, walk, walk, wlak. and its not a warm up or cool down either.

I understand the need for slow to moderate cardio. I do it once a week for recovery, but I'm not sure why people are using this to replace any form of Hight intesity stuff all together.
