Why do I gas during my matches so quickly?

It sucks. I work my ass off at practice 6 days a week and go balls to the wall. If you watched me train you would say that I have fantastic cardio and endurance. I rarely ever gas during training and conditioning and I am constantly pushing myself. However, during actual matches when it actually matters, I am sucking wind within the first 30 seconds. I have no fucking clue why this is. My lungs are burning so much quicker, doing so much less work than actually at practice. Maybe its nerves? That is the only thing I can think of. Anyone experience this/have advice?

I had the same problem. What fixed it alot for me was diet in the hours before the match. make sure you are eating a little bit of carbs and drinking (sipping) in the hours before you're match. Just making that tiny change made all the difference

It might be due to an adrenaline dump, which is common for people who just started competing. What are you involved in? When i first started wrestling and going to judo tournaments, my main problem was that I would be so tense and nervous that I would only take quick, shallow breaths and as a result was gassed in under a minute. Even now I have to remind myself constantly during matches to take deep breaths, but it also gives me something to focus on rather than how nervous I am.

Learn how to breathe, relax. If you treat it just like a normal match you will be fine. Breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth.

You should do that all the time anyway while training to get into the habit. Makes a huge difference IMO because it regulates your breathing.

I think it's generally an adrenaline issue. Just try to relax and learn how to breathe properly. Oscar de la Hoya is known for gassing during fights also. All his trainers vouch that he works very hard in the gym, it's believed that he takes too much intensity into the ring and that wears him down as the rounds go by, remember it's about emotional, mental and physical health and if one of the three isn't there then you're fucked. I wouldn't be surprised if your problems are of a similar nature.

This is basically what i was going to say. Learn to control your breathing.

Most likely adrenaline dump like most have already said. More Mat time in competition should make this better. Also, make sure you warm up prior to your match like boxers do.

Try to get a little sweat going but not too taxing.

Sounds like you're probably getting too hyped up and wasting a lot of nervous energy + being to tense and not breathing properly in your bouts which makes a massive difference

Breath and relax, I had the same problem, just make sure there is someone in your corner telling you to breath.
