Why is it bad to get in fight shape on a treadmill?

In this interview with Frank Mir he states "its not a good idea to get in shape for a fight on a treadmill"

I don't understand why, can someone explain?

he proabably means that time would be better spent sparring, fight specific conditioning, and training technique

He explained it on TUF...that for fighting you need anerobic cardio as opposed to aerobic.

You problably saw it, it was when Mir brought in Wand's conditioning coach to kick everyone's ass with that cardio workout, and Mir said long distance runs don't really help.

As a cardio tool the treadmill is fine. As a tool to improve pure running it is somewhat lacking.

I think so...purely anaerobic would have the action stop almost completely over and over after every anaerobic burst...

so both must be trained

You can use the treadmill, just use it at a stupidly difficult incline at a preposterous speed for short amount of time.

True however training on the treadmill or for that matter a rowing machine, etc. has it's beneifts ... you can do them without a partner, it's easier to stay in the exact zone that you want to be in and chance of injury may be smaller. Frank Shamrock trains on the eliptical for at least 30 minutes (heartrate based and at 85%) and he's NOT known for being in bad shape (injured and unable to train properly yes, but bad shape ... NOOOOO!!!!)

I would love to see Frank Mir use Bas Rutten's threadmill workout and then hear his opinion.
