whatever feels comfortable on your feet. But I don't know if they sell shoe's separately. "whats a good running shoe" unless you meant whats a good pair of running shoes.

so first things first.. your name is 'marine', but your going into the national guard? o_O
Nike makes great running shoes in my opinion, just don't buy anything under 50 dollars and make sure you get the right fit for your kind of foot. (Check google to find what kind of foot you have to have the perfect running shoe fit and efficiency.)
Puma is a good brand, theres tons.

Z-Coil Running Shoes for Back & Knee Problems
if yer 22 and still indestructible, any old running shoe will do. if you have back problems, knee problems, or are trying to avoid either (or if you have a job that keeps you standing all day long) check these bad boys out. i have a pair myself and they really help absorb stress to the spine and joints.
here's their website: http://www.zcoil.com/products_styles.html
the founder invented them 'cause he kept getting shin splints.

Go to a store that sells athletic shoes. Not Dicks or Modells, a dedicated, athletic shoe store. Talk to person there, say how your looking for a running shoe. If they are at all competant they will have you walk around, look at your arches, measure your feet, etc. then take your time and try on lots of different shoes, and find one that is priced right and more importantly, feels good. A good shoe makes a world of difference.
Also, I was in the national guard before I went to school, so the best of luck to you.

asics or new balance make the best running shoes. so far asics is far from the best, check on the running shoe magazines and they always choose that brand

I'd go with Asics or New Balance but I'm wearing Nike at the moment and they feel really good. I assume you are doing long distance roadwork and not sprints?, if so they I would suggest you get a pair which are absorbant to help your knees and ankles with the impact.

it all depends on your feet. i had to go to a running speciality store and they looked at the way i walked, stood up, and the way my shoes wear down on the soles. the guy suggested the Nike Boweman series shoes and man do they feel great. before that i wore a new balance.

This is the best advice.
I have really flat narrow feet so nothing "off the rack" will fit me properly.
I go to my local running store and they take the time to fit me properly.
