Hi Folks,
Allow me to introduce myself......I'm B.Mac and I'm hooked on watching MMA and am particularly interested in ju-jitsu and grappling. I'm 49 years old but in excellent physical shape except cardio which is deplorable. My history in sports has been 20 yrs of ultra-high risk individual sport, particularly freestyle/ inverted/ insane snow skiing which is kinda hard to find in florida. I have very limited formal MA training i.e. a year of tang so do, and a year of kick boxing, and oh yeah can't forget another year of cappoera (totally boring).

Is it possible at my age to get to a level relatively soon to be allowed to spar w/ similar skilled competitors w/o getting smashed to a pulp right off the bat?? I believe I've got pretty good stand up (boxing) skills (from years of being young, dumb and a propensity toward drinking, which I quit 20 years ago) but am weak at grappling and forget ju-jitsu 'cause I'd be a human knot in minutes.

To make a long story short I'm not afraid to fight, even at my completely untrained level but I live for adrenaline and a challenge. Any advice on how to start? I'm absolutely amazed at the technicality of MMA and am sure to take a few licks but I bored to death and am looking for a challenge......

Don't you think it is a bit late for you to start? 49 years old? I mean, that's crazy.

At 49 you should be looking at lawnmowers, not MMA Trainning.

Ohhh, and there's always golf.

go find a good jiujitsu school and sign up...if u know some standup, the jiujitsu aspect is the hardest thing to pick up, cause is just very very technical

if u dont understand the ground at all, anyone u "roll" or spar with will make u look really really bad...really really bad, even people who just know "some"

stick to the basics, dont go out and try and learn "advanced set ups" or chokes...learn how to hold positions...learn basic escapes

49 huh? Hmmmmm... I'd be careful, or train with people your own age. Or wipe this crazy Idea out of your head and toss your dreams aside to persue a goal that makes sense.

I'm not looking to compete at any serious level just for adreneline and to test my natural skills against some semi skilled, technically trained guys. OUCH! In it for the thrill and to learn some new skills.
