What is now considered healthy

I ran across this article and thought it was funny/sad.

(Here is the link to the full article, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6994480.stm)

The part I liked was this:

"The average person should be able to: Walk a mile in 15 minutes, Carry two bags of shopping from the supermarket to the car, Climb the stairs in a house without getting breathless"

I look at is as either:

a: It makes me feel better about my own health/workout.

b: Sad, because you can realize just how low the bar as been set for what is considered "healthy".

I was thinking about this the other day and came to this. If I can't lift something, I don't get too upset about it for some reason, I just ask for help. But for me, NOTHING is more disheartening than sucking wind. At my worst condition I recall getting winded after climbing a flight of stairs, NEVER again.

Yup. You can always ask for help lifting something heavy, but just try getting someone to give you a piggyback to the fourth floor.

Conditioning above strength in my book.

Definitely! With my training lately, it's mostly focused on condition versus strength. I don't care if I can bench 250lbs (which I probably can't, ha. Maybe once) as long as I can last my Muay Thai training and matches.

Hey, I remember getting winded climbing stairs...

...that is after climbing 8 stories in 50+ pounds of gear like three times.

Seriously though the general public view of what "healthy" and "fit" are extraordinarily skewed. Most people only care enough to do what easily fits into their bad habits. I mean, check out this link from Men's Health http://www.menshealth.com/challenge/...it%20Challenge , their "challenge" consists of 5 events to see how fit you are, and to get the max score all you have to do is 50 pushups, 5 single leg squats (not even pistols), 24" vertical jump, 12 chinups, and the only one I'd have a hard time with is a sub 5 minute mile, but if I trained for it I could do it, it's not impossible. Anybody who can and does run a sub 5 minute mile has my respect though, from my experience as a highschool track athlete the mile is the single most painful worst race distance ever invented, and honestly, I prefer long distance and HIIT for my workouts. With the exception of the mile and maybe the vertical jump (because I know the last time my vertical jump was tested It was over 24" but I don't know about the average vertical jump scores) those numbers shouldn't even be a challenge for your average young adult to middle aged male.

As someone who deals with motivated athletes on one hand, and the general public on the other the I get really frustrated because people aren't even looking to get fit, people want to lose weight to look good and to make themselves feel like they are putting the effort in to get healthy but no one is willing to work for it. I find that most people in general just aren't willing to work hard for anything, I hope someone will tell me I'm wrong about that, but that's just been my experience.

All this information says to me is that its time to build the long boats and start raiding again. Should be even easier pickings this time around...

...so who's with me?

HAHAHAHA!!

What people don't realize is that it's not THAT hard to get from below average to above average. Moving into the well above average category is where it gets tricky.

Case in point, I let myself go after I was denied by the Cops for the 3rd time. I got a new job sitting at a desk all day and really went downhill. I noticed while walking to work which is uphill I was sucking a lot of wind, this bothered me. So I started back into things with 2-3 sprint sessions per week on my bike 10-15 minutes at a time. Really, that's all it took for me to be able to really hoof that walk to work without breathing heavily.
