Hey, I remember getting winded climbing stairs...
...that is after climbing 8 stories in 50+ pounds of gear like three times.
Seriously though the general public view of what "healthy" and "fit" are extraordinarily skewed. Most people only care enough to do what easily fits into their bad habits. I mean, check out this link from Men's Health
http://www.menshealth.com/challenge/...it%20Challenge , their "challenge" consists of 5 events to see how fit you are, and to get the max score all you have to do is 50 pushups, 5 single leg squats (not even pistols), 24" vertical jump, 12 chinups, and the only one I'd have a hard time with is a sub 5 minute mile, but if I trained for it I could do it, it's not impossible. Anybody who can and does run a sub 5 minute mile has my respect though, from my experience as a highschool track athlete the mile is the single most painful worst race distance ever invented, and honestly, I prefer long distance and HIIT for my workouts. With the exception of the mile and maybe the vertical jump (because I know the last time my vertical jump was tested It was over 24" but I don't know about the average vertical jump scores) those numbers shouldn't even be a challenge for your average young adult to middle aged male.
As someone who deals with motivated athletes on one hand, and the general public on the other the I get really frustrated because people aren't even looking to get fit, people want to lose weight to look good and to make themselves feel like they are putting the effort in to get healthy but no one is willing to work for it. I find that most people in general just aren't willing to work hard for anything, I hope someone will tell me I'm wrong about that, but that's just been my experience.
