What kind of shape do you need to be in?

I'm plan on joining a mma gym
(its not hard core , you guys refer to it as a mcdojo but it is perfect for everyday people)
I went to one of its schools a couple of years ago for about 7 months and loved it. The only regret I had was that I was not in good shape when I started. It was fustrating to have my body fail when I knew there was more I could do. I used to be a great athlete but that over ten years ago and I have really let myself go.

So my question is should I get into shape first ? Or should I join the gym and get into shape on the fly?
I have limited time so its one or the other

Join the gym. People that plan on getting in shape and then training generally end up doing neither.

Join the gym. It's what I did and after a month I'm about 100x in better shape then when I started.

I kept saying I would get into shape beforehand but I never did.

Get in the Dojo and start going, if you're doing somthing you like it's less likely to seem like work and you'll get more out of it.

QFT.

About 2 months ago when I decided to take up boxing I thought "better get in some shape first". So I started running, pushups crunches etc.

Lasted maybe two weeks before I thought "screw this" and got bored.

A week later I just showed up to boxing and the first thing the coach told me was "lets work on getting you fit first".

Haven't looked back.
