The weight I gained was all muscle. I had a six pack before, and I had a six pack after. If any of the weight was fat, you couldn't tell. I continued to gain weight after that, but at a much slower rate (as one would expect).
My circumstances at the time were ideal for rapid weight gain. I had just finished a very long period of careful rehab after shoulder surgery. Naturally, I'd dropped a lot of weight, since I wasn't able to squat, deadlift, or bench for almost a year. I had been doing more cardio than usual, and not eating very much.
In the fall of 2001 (my surgery was in December 2000), my doctor gave me the okay to lift heavy again. I was chomping at the bit to get strong again, so I dedicated every workout and every meal to getting bigger. I ate more protein than I'd ever eaten. I was working at a steakhouse at the time and ate steaks four times per week, in addition to whole cans of turkey or chicken for dinner. I was also eating eggs and protein powder for breakfast.
This was not a situation where you had a consistent lifter suddenly gaining 18 lbs in a month. What you did have was an experienced lifter, who gains muscle more easily than most, who had lost a lot of muscle due to a long break from lifting, who, upon beginning to lift heavy again, began eating a high protein, high calorie diet (I think I was using creatine too), getting plenty of rest, and lifting heavy six days per week.

Fair enough, I don't want to argue but it is HIGHLY unlikely that all 18lbs of that gain were in muscle mass, maybe some but 18lbs in a month is too much to be pure muscle gain. I'll leave it here. Thanks.

Okay, well, if you don't want to argue, maybe rather than immediately calling bullshit on someone who's never shown to be an exaggerator (you're free to look at anything I've posted), you should look at all angles and consider the possibility that, under the right circumstances, strange things can and do happen.
I simply don't get fat - lucky genes I guess. I have always been very, very lean, no matter what I ate, since I was about 8 yrs old. So, if I gain 18 lbs, it can only be muscle. This will probably change when I get older, but, luckily for me, I still have the kind of metabolism that simply doesn't allow fat to accumulate.
I'm aware there are bullshitters on these forums, so I do understand your skepticism, to a point.

Please don't be offended by my skepticism, I wasn't meant to sound personal and I'm not going to be sad enough looking over your posting history. I don't think you are lying but I think your view of things is slightly warped, maybe you did put on significant muscle mass but 18lbs of pure muscle mass in 1 month isn't realistic to me, some of it must have been fat gain.
I'll leave it here. Thanks for your civilised responses and not turning this disagreement into a shit fest.

With respect, my view is clearer than yours, since I experienced it. My memory is crystal clear on the facts: one month, 18 pounds, lean before, every bit as lean after.
I think it would be good if you researched this and let me know what you find. Ask a large sample of experienced bodybuilders how fast a person could gain muscle, if that person 1) was 24 years old, 2) gained muscle easily, 3) had been much bigger previously, but had lost a lot of muscle, and 4) did everything they could to gain muscle, short of roiding.
I'm more puzzled than offended by your skepticism, because you act like it's some incredible thing to put on muscle this fast. Even before I experienced it myself, I would never have assumed it was impossible - just unlikely.
Maybe next time I decide to do a half marathon, afterward I'll bulk up again and document it (since I always lose a bunch of muscle whenever I train for endurance races). That probably won't be for at least six months - more likely a year or more, as I'm in no mood to run long distances these days. Still, if I were to try it again, I think it would be easier this time around, since I can cook better now than I could then

No offense, but I am a bit skeptical myself. 1 pound a week of muscle is incredible. 4.5 pounds a week sounds a little... exagerated.

I find it amazing that every single person who claims to have gained 30 lbs of muscle in a month has under 200ish posts.
With that said, you're a liar, found some nice roids or need to take a dump.

I think Houstoner is being genious. He flexes a load of lard that he puts on in 30 days and thinks it's muscle. It puts him in his happy place where all is good.

Houstoner, you keep sayin you looked just as lean. That`s no proof that you actually were just as lean. Did you have a body composition check?
I`ve gained alot of weight at times and it looked like genuine muscle. My shoulders were bigger while my stomach wasn`t etc. and after a body composition scan I found out it was in fact all fat.
If you were really underweight or had really low bf when you started it is possible that you just went back to your original size and still looked lean but it doesn`t mean you actually gained much muscle.
Also, 4.5lbs of muscle a week, did you even eat 4.5lbs of protein?
And you said you were lifting 175? Squatting or benching? Pounds or kilos?

I agree with this post.
Do you really think you could consume that much food and protein and gain that much muscle without putting on any fat? Do you really expect us to believe you are a rare exception compared to other humans? I don't think you are lying, but I think you are delusional on this. You may truly believe you put on 18 lbs of pure muscle, but you didn't.
