Icon10 Want to Star Doing HIIT Training

Just wanted to know what a good HIIT program to start out with might be. I lift weights 3-4 times per week and do 30 minutes of typical cardio (treadmill, bike, elliptical) on those same days. Any suggestions or good website I might check out? Thanks.

Actually I should mention that, at least in my experience, tabatas aren't as teh shit as the publicity suggests, at least when it comes to sprints. I found the 20/10 sec structure rather easy (maybe because I'm slow and it takes me a few seconds to really get moving). 40/20 or even 60/30 work better for me.

The tabatas are awesome, just remember with them to really push yourself save nothing! The point of High Intensity Interval Training is HIGH INTENSITY, it tough and draining and mentally as well as physically challenging!

With the HIIT you can play with the work to rest ratios tabata have a work to rest ratio of 2:1 which is extremely demanding, some other variants offer you a ratio of 1:2, so 30 secs of work followed by a minute of rest or even 1:3 (30 secs of work followed by 90 secs of rest/recovery). Litvinov sprints have a high rest to work ratio of roughly 1:3 and when first attempted a ratio of 1:5 is not uncommon.

Just play around with different work to rest ratios.

My favourites are 30 seconds sprint to 60 seconds rest, 60 seconds work to 120 seconds rest and tabata.

Great post.

Tabatas are unique, and I wouldn't even put them into the same category as HIIT (at least, I don't think of them as HIIT). If done right, it's kinda like HIIT on crystal meth.

If you are running already, I'd recommend sprint intervals. They are easy enough on a treadmill for time, or go to your local track and sprint the straights and jog the curves. It sounds easy enough, but trust me, you'll learn all about HIIT fast this way.
