Litvinov sprints have a high rest to work ratio of roughly 1:3 and when first attempted a ratio of 1:5 is not uncommon.

Tabatas are unique, and I wouldn't even put them into the same category as HIIT (at least, I don't think of them as HIIT). If done right, it's kinda like HIIT on crystal meth.
If you are running already, I'd recommend sprint intervals. They are easy enough on a treadmill for time, or go to your local track and sprint the straights and jog the curves. It sounds easy enough, but trust me, you'll learn all about HIIT fast this way.
