Handcycle

I'm going to make my own stationary handcycle. What's a handcycle? Have a look:
http://www.spinlife.com/critpath/mat...?categoryID=10

BTW, I do not have any kind of disability. I am 100% able bodied. I ride a regular mountain bike at this time but had the idea to get a handcycle also.

I wanted to buy one but I don't have the bucks.
I'm going to make the stationary one out of an OLD stationary pedal bike I have.

My idea is that bicycling has got to be one of the pfp best ways to get really good cardio, especially if done right (mountain biking, LOT's of hills, hills, hills).

I'm guessing that handcycling has got to be a great way to develop conditioning also.

The problem with stationary bike riding is that it's can become easy to not push oneself. So for this handcycling thing I'm going to develop some random system that will force me to push myself (something like the deck of cards thing...i.e., you do whatever the cards tell you to).

I'll be posting pics of the progress, while building this thing, from start to finish. I'm not overly mechanically inclined, so this could get ugly.

I love cycling for conditioning as well, whether it's mountain biking, road cycling or my exercise bike I love it.

this idea sounds interesting though, are you gonna post about it here or in your journal?

I guess both. Unless there's a problem with posting it here. Doesn't really matter to me.

I've just always been intrigued with ways to get cardio by arm / upper body movements. I know that rowing is good too, so I may look into getting a row machine.

Man, if they weren't so expensive I'd buy one in a heartbeat and take it out on some hills once a week in addition to my normal stuff. I even thought of looking for an old used wheel chair somewhere...seriously.

drive up to a private hotpitail(the type where you can't go if you have a HMO) and jack one of the wheel chairs at the entrance.... i really want to hear how this works out

So, almost a year later and I am ready to begin my project.
LOL

Actually, what happened is this:

I began to think the idea was probably stupid. SO I just forgot about it. I figured heavy bag work and other exercises would work just as well.

Well then I watched a couple of those UFC All Access shows and saw the fighters often using handcycling as part of their training.
And I saw some footage of some college wrestlers training on CSTV, and these guys were going nuts using...you guessed it, handcycles.

So this project is back on.

I'll post pics of the various parts, and I'll post the progress as it goes along.

I ain't stealing no wheel chair either.

So what's my dead line? My internal urgency detector is utterly broken. Like a year you think? Or am I being unrealistic and pushing myself to hard?

The problem with an upper body ergometer and hand cycle for conditioning is that you cannot get your heart rate up near max due to the fact that you simply don't have enough muscle mass in your arms compared to your legs to stress your heart. Other than that, it'll be great fo developing conditioning in your arms.

Since your going balls out. Might as well combine both. Be the first to make a hand-cycle attachment for your stationary bike. Screw the back/forth motion. Go for twin cycle power
