Turf Toe

After about a month and a half of having pain in my foot, I decided to get a second opinion. After the 2nd doctor had me take an MRI, I was just informed that I have a grade II sprain my foot. More exactly the Ligament running along my big toe into my foot has a partial tear. Commonly referred to as turf toe. Anyone ever had an injury like this from MMA training. I injured my foot during sparring. My big toe dislocated during sparring and crossed all the way over my next toe causing the tear in the ligament. First doctor said it was just a dislocated toe and a minor sprain. Appearently he was wrong. Anyone have suggestions on how to prevent these types of injuries?

No, I was actually stepping back as my sparring partner threw a punch. When i ducked his cross and went to step forward, I felt my foot stick and pain shot through my foot.

Let me say that it doesn't sound like your first doctor was wrong, just that he didn't provide you with the propper treatment.

Turf Toe is a sprain of the ligaments of the great toe, a partial tear is a grade I or II sprain of those ligaments, a grade III sprain is a complete rupture typically requiring surgery.

Did your doctor recommend PT? This injury can be pretty frustrating as it is hard not to be on your feet when you train.

Doctor didn't recomend any therapy. I am just gonna try to stay off of my foot for a few more weeks and hope it heals. I don't feel much discomfort unless my foot bends, like if i tried to get in a pushup position. I want to work on some striking with my hands, but don't know if it's even worth risking putting weight on the foot.

I'd take it easy. I'm not familiar with the condition but sounds like you need time to let it heal. Focus on your upper body while your lower body recovers.

Take Arnica 30CH, it's a homeopathic that works well with tissue damage and bruising, it should help speed up your recovery.

Also, massage as you start to get back into action after your recovery would be beneficial. You need to make sure you get the toe (and foot) worked on as soon as you can to prevent shortening of the ligament or tightening of the fascia of your foot.

I have started taping it and it atleast keeps my toe from flexing up or curling. The med's he prescribed me are helping with the swelling. Problem is I can't take any IBprofen based medicine since I have Ulcerative Colitis. So I have to be careful what I put into my stomach. It sucks because this is going to end up being like 2 months I lost of training. And even worse, it happened after I switched to a new school. So out of the 2 months I paid in advance, I have only been able to actually train for a combined time of maybe 2 weeks. Atleast I can go there and lift weights, I guess.

Most gyms can suspend your membership for a few months... I'm sure if they aren't dicks you can ask them.
