Triathlon--Questions

My cardio is fairly good, it can always get better though. I'm looking to compete in a triathlon sometime (maybe a year from now), not the ironman one, I'll save that for a couple more years down the road. Haha. Anyways, anybody here ever done one? If so, what kind of bike would be a good buy within a reasonable price range? I'm not worried about the swimming part, as I have always been a good swimmer and I get laps in here and there...if I trained I'd obviously train in all three areas, but I'm more concerned with the Biking than anything. Is it the easiest of the three? Any info will help. Thanks!

I trained for one back in 2002, but I left the country a week before the event. I'm a natural runner, so that was the easiest part for me. The swim was the hardest to train for. I don't know where yours will be, but if the swim is in open water (not a pool) it is MUCH harder. I had to swim in the uber salty mediterranean sea and I swallowed water by the gallon while training.

As far as what bike to use....I'm clueless. I had a cheap 10-speed mountain bike.

Open water swims are the shit. I did a 2 miler awhile back and it sucked every bit, took a long time too.

You know, there are forums dedicated to triathlon training, just on on Sherdog. I am sure with some research, you can find one.

Until then, go to craigslist and look for a road bike there.

My advice is to try not to get too hung up on bike specifics. You have a cool goal and don't let a minor point derail you.

Pick up a used bike for cheap and worry about getting a trick one later. See if you like the sport first then think about investing coin.

Practise the transitions as they can screw you up. Go for comfort vs. time - i.e. don't ride your bike in a Speedo, make sure you dry your feet off, etc.

Try to do the swim course at least once ahead of time.

Other than that just go for it. You will meet some pretty cool people and lots of fit chicks.
