Tips, excercises, etc...

To start things off i'm currently 5'4 and weigh 123 pounds. In case your wondering i'm only 13 years old. I would say i'm pretty in shape for my age. I run at least a mile everyday on the tredmill, and i'm starting to get close to a mile & 1/2. I do basic excercises, 30 crunches in the morning and 30 crunches at night before I start running, and sometimes do it freely if i'm just bored. The most pushups I can do are 20 which I find pretty sad, I don't work on my pushups much. I use to lift 15lbs, but I quit about two months ago when I finally cared about my height. I'm taking wrestling which is my 1st experience next week. I think i'll do fine since i'm the biggest one there, and yes I know i'll be facing other people in my weight. I also drink protein shakes everyday and try to eat as much as I can.

I've also noticed that i've gotten faster when I started sprinting during my suicides in basketball practice. Did I get faster by sprinting suicides? Should I keep sprinting? I usually don't sprint in suicides, only straight foward. So do you guys have any tips on how I can increase my cardio at my age? What I can do for wrestling? Running? Basic excercises?

Wait a minute your saying I won't get any taller by running, or doing any of those basic excercises? I thought that was only for lifting?!

Your only going to stunt your growth if you are lifting heavy weights in a gym, so dont worry about it.

well i shall give you my 2 cents. First on sprinting i would say yes keep up with the sprinting and uphill sprints will help with the explosivness you'll need in wrestling, but remember it should not be overdone. Try bear crawling it will help with your upper body strength and endurance. For your push ups when you get to your 20th rep hold in the up position for time, it will also build endurance. Start doing bodyweight squats and lunges to help with "shoots" and takedown power. Another exercise you could try but i recommend you get someone to teach it to you properly is the wresler's bridge. This will help when someone is tryin to pin you, and build strength in your neck and back which is essential.

Ask your coaches questions on conditioning, technique drills and any tips that will help you get better in wrestling. Also read books, watch videos, and check websites find information on training for wrestling. Don't rely on being bigger than everyone else to be your key to victory. Another thing would be if you wanna get better at wrestling, would actually be to start wrestling. That's all i can think of at the moment but there is more to learn. Have a good season and i hope you enjoy your experience, kick some butt.

Hey Kid,
If you want to get conditioned, I mean really conditioned check out the book by Matt Furey called
Combat Conditioning- Functional Exercises for Fitness and Combat Sports. You are not gonna get big and bulky, but you will get true strength and powerful lungs.

Later!
